When you've drawn someone's character, and they trade/sell/gift the character, and the new owner uses the art you drew of them (on their page or in an art collection of the character, GIVEN THAT they credited you)

I'm happy they enjoy the art of their new character! I don't care if I didn't draw it for them in the first place, it's cool.

It bothers me, but only if the drawing was a gift or something with emotional/sentimental value. If it was a commissioned piece or an art trade, I don't care as much.

It bothers me no matter what. I drew the image for the original owner, not for them. Even if they own the character now, the art was not made for them to use.

I don't care either way / I don't have any specific feelings towards this.

I don't draw, or I never draw other people's characters, so this does not apply to me.
I guess if its just a Comission or something I wouldn´t realy care and may be happy that the new owner of the character enjoys the art. But if it was a gift art, maybe even with something like an insider between friends or so I guess it would bother me a bit. But since I never was in a situation like this I can just guess ^^
I once crafted a gorgeous bottle and cup combo for my friend who asked for something very specific and I was still able to go above and beyond. She showed it off and someone liked it so much they bought it off her (after she asked me if it was okay) for $200. I was happy for her as she needed the money. My feelings weren't hurt as I knew she fully appreciated the gift.
But I have never sold anything else for close to that. And now I don't have access to a kiln.
lmao what why are people bothered by that? It's art of their character! Why does it matter that the character used to be owned by someone else. Good art shouldn't be left in permission-purgatory like that.

I was gonna say it doesn't matter at all but actually, thinking about it, If I made it as a gift for a really close friend of mine or something I'd probably be a little uncomfortable with them using it. I mean, it's okay I guesss but I'd definitely feel more comfortable with pieces that have less sentimental value.
This has happened to me and 'm fine with it. The person who now owns the character even came to ask me if they could use the art after explaining that the original owner let them have the character , and in turn i said yes and as a bonus changed the "character belongs to ____" section to their name
This hasn't happened to me but I think it's about to...but anyway I just feel like whoever likes the character enough to buy them I guess should be able to use the art of that character. Even though I may have wanted to kinda do a nice thing for the previous owner, I also drew it because I like the character and that matters too.
(Although if it were my decision I'd say slooowwww down with the characters changing hands so often, yikes. Are they characters that they cherish or just status symbols? But that's another conversation.)
The one thing that annoys me sometime is them using art I've drawn of the character with like, crazy sentimental value. When I was younger I drew my old sona and a friends cuddling, but she gave her sona away. The person she gave it too had cut my sona from the image and kept the other on their profile, it kinda bugged me but now I'm a lot more understanding. People commission art of the character, so it should stay with the character.
I haven't really made many characters for people let alone have drawn that character for them, but if the art is a gift then I do highly prefer that nobody but the person I made it for uses it, but if it's a commission or something, then if the person that paid for it says they can then I'm fine with that. Mainly because how I think of it is, a gift is for one person or multiple, but it normally sticks with those people. It's kind of like how it's considered rude by some people to give away a birthday or Christmas present, I prefer if nobody but the intended person uses the gift because it's kind of like giving it away.
As for commissions, if you buy something with your own money from a store, then normally you give it away when you no longer use it, or throw it out, so in my mind its the same thing if you let someone use said commission, however if the person that bought it doesn't want it being used anymore then that's fine, because they still bought the art in the first place.
I really don't mind! If it's a friends character that I really love and I drew them art a lot and a new person gets the character and uses the art, I'd be a little sad because it was meant for my friend, but if the character I drew is for a complete stranger then I don't care at all.
Nah, i would just be happy that they like my art too ^^ If you draw closed species, i guess you should be aware that people sometimes (or some often) trade those ^^ I guess if somebody gifts me a drawing and doesn't want that other people use the drawing if i trade the characters, they should either draw my Gaia, since she is my sona, or caitlin, since i never trade her, haha XD
and if people have a problem with me using their artwork, they can also just tell me ~
I wouldn't have a problem because when someone sells/gives a character to someone else, they are also passing on any art of them (which adds to the character's value too). They totally have a right to use any art of a character they own. And if someone was using art not drawn by them on their profile, I'd expect them to give credit anyway
Yea, I thought so too at first, until i saw people saying they didn't want their art to be passed on nor add to the value of the character, so I got curious! Same though, it's common courtesy to credit
Huh, I've never seen that before and tbh I don't really understand it. Fair enough if the character was a fursona and you did a drawing of your character with them that meant something personal, but just any art? I don't understand that at all. As people have said below, I'd also be honoured they liked my art
What I don't like is when I give someone a character and they sell/give it away. It's a huge peeve of mine. If people don't want those characters anymore they should retire them or give them back to me. Hopefully that doesn't make me sound like an ass???
No, it doesn't! It's just anothet topic than this one I do know what you mean though, though, I also think such things should be specified explicitly when the character is gifted to your friend so there's 0 confusion. If they still do it then, then yea, it's very icky. But I also don't sell, trade or gift anything I'm still attached to, either.
I'm cool with it too haha. Often I draw gifts simply because I like the design in particular. So even if the former owner is a friend, chances are I would have drawn the character anyway if he was someone else's. + if anyone used my art to decorate their page I'd feel honored lol.
As for me, it doesn't bother me! If they have an art piece of the character by me that is missing from their art collection I usually even link it to them My rules are basically that if someone owns a character in an artwork I drew, they get to use that artwork, so as long as credit is given where it is needed, I'm cool with it. As long as they don't recolour the art or trace over it or something of course. But adding it to character art collections or using it on their page is all fine.
