Someone on DeviantArt is holding an art contest, and one of the rules is that you have to advertise the contest in a journal before you can join. Given that the contest itself is something you normally would be interested in, does this hold you back?

It isn't my favorite, but since everyone says to, I do it anyway. I don't think you should be forced to advertise with a journal. You should add the link in the description. It's a little less confusing. There's always that one person who doesn't read it though.

I don't find many contests with no rules about making an advertisement journal.

I mean...I normally don't do those contests anymore??
They annoy me and 90% of the time I just don't join unless the prizes are really good ;;

But I tend to join contests that have the option to advertising journals!^^

Sometimes this holds me back, but if I'm really into the contest then I'll do it anyway :)

It would hold me back a bit, I mean, if you think about it, the more people are entering the contest, the less chance you have to win, right?

Come to think of it, advertising the contest really is no good for those entering it no :XD:

I feel the same as you do, Bienie. Advertising for these things, and always making a new journal, kind of makes me anxious, so I try to avoid it or just put many things in one journal to not bomb peoples inboxes ^^'
I also do not join contests when they ask for watchers, unless I actually like the things they post.

Yea, I don't like those either :noes: I just... don't really see why you would have to watch them? It's not relevant to the contest itself, you're already receiving art from them... and those people can just unwatch you after the contest has been wrapped up. Kind of useless if you ask me.

I really dislike it when people make that a requirement. Some people out there might need advetisement, but then again why hold a contest or raffle if you only have 40 watchers, which more than half don't pay attention to you. I also don't like "you must be a watcher" requirements. If you advertise, and then some other artist comes along, they are both forced to start watching this new artist theyve never heard of AND give them more promotion. It just stinks.

If there could be more to the journals than just promotion, that'd be awesome. But for now, most serve as a way to get watchers. Shrug

Yea, I agree. Especially the forced watch one combined with the obligatory journal seems kind of weird for a contest? I mean... those people are already drawing art for you, that is their entry, not all those additional things that only serve to get you more watchers, which should not be the main motive of a contest :noes:

Exactly! Getting watchers in general shouldnt be the motive of a lot of things you do on DA. You gain those deservingly, with experience and patience. Nod

It would hold me back, and most of the time I wouldn't even join the raffle/contest. If it was a contest that I was really interested in and it was big for me, I would probably join. However I've never actually joined a raffle/contest since most of them require you to advertise in journals or watch people. Talking about watching people for contests, I don't want to watch someone I'm not interested in just to join a contest that I'm interested in. And that is my small explanation to why I never really join raffles or contests.

I personally don't like the rule "you have to be a watcher" for contests either. For raffles, it's okay, because you're giving away stuff for free and you can do it to thank your watchers. But with a contest... You're already receiving art, so I just don't see why it needs to be watcher-exclusive personally!
I don't like advertising, either :noes:

I don't mind since I held my own contest a looong time ago. When you're not very popular anyway. Cuz it helps get the word out about the contest.
If you got a bazillion watchers and still have that as a requirement I'm not likely to join however.

I think it's okay though, if you can get a little extra prize for that- more like a raffle which doesn't really has anything to do with the contest apart from
Advertising it. This is something I do myself too xD just because I know some people don't like it. So then, they don't have to do it if they don't want to.
If you know what I mean xD

Yea, I can be okay with it in that case, too, because it's optional and a fun little extra reward :P

If its mandatory, I don't join them. I feel as if that's a cheap way to get watchers, (if it's a simple raffle of points) if both

-"you must be a watcher"
-"make a journal about this raffle"

are valid conditions you must meet.

Anyways, I don't like spamming my watchers with journals, and I'd find such advertising ones to become annoying if I did them frequently.

When i host contests i do that so more people will have the chance to join :0 simply because it can be really hard to get stuff around on DA

But personally i do it if im interested in the contest, now it is rare that i join them but when i do I will gladly share it around so everyone can have the chance to win neat prizes and stuff c:

I see! I just know from my own experience that if you see a lot of advertising around, you will simply start ignoring it eventually, and so I try to keep advertising on my account to a minimum (at least, journals that were made only to advertise) because I find them boring myself :P I also noticed that people will pay more attention to a contest journal that is linked in the description of an entry than one that is linked in a journal of its own, so I prefer to do the former.

True tho, i ignore those journals too B^))))

And it do sound reasonable to leave a link with the entry,, mhh
I'd feel bad for changing it in my Comtest since

I'll advertise for people I know if they're holding a raffle or giveaway (or if they directly ask me too for contests, not being an artist I can't partake and generally just delete "I'm holding a contest" posts right away). I don't particularly mind, so long as I've known them for awhile, or if the raffle/giveaway is particularly juicy. I don't think it should need to be a journal post though. Maybe a journal or 5-10 tags or something would be better. That way if you have a lot of followers you needent bug all of them about it.

Yeah, I try not to advertise more than once a week or so. And if I fill out a meme I always just tag myself if it tells me to tag people. :p

It depends. If they're going to have enough people entering without then I feel like they're just begging for watchers, but if they don't have many watchers and are trying to offer a lagit contest with decent prizes then it wouldn't deter me

I know it does hold me back, simply because I feel bad for making advertisements these days and I prefer to prevent it if I can.
That, and the fact that when I DO join a contest, I will link the contest in the description already, so I will already advertise it there, and I don't like being obligated to make an additional journal about it :noes:
