I see it happen every now and then that people rant saying that you should comment on their art if you fave it, yet when you go to their own favourites they didn't comment on everything either. Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

Yes, that is indeed somewhat hypocritical

I don't know / I have no opinion

No, that makes sense (comment why, if you feel like it? I haven't really heard a proper explanation for this yet)
As you can see I tend to go through my gallery when it hits 500+ deviations etc. soooo I kinda don't comment on most art unless there's something I'd really like to point out, either positive or negative. But really it is quite hypocritical of them, I feel, to make such a fuss over something they don't comply to anyhow...
I must admit, I love it when I get comments on my work because I love to know what others think and sometimes comments will even spark a conversation which is always great. But I won't tell or force anyone to comment because I'd much rather a comment be sincere and not forced or obligated, even if I were to only get 1 per pic. But I do also appreciate faves just as much, especially since I'm guilty of a lot of fave and runs myself. Sometimes I just can't think of the right words to say, so it would be wrong to be mad at those who are the same way
Yes, it is. Although I love comments, faving is kinda nice, unless it's by a deviant who favorites everything they see in the newest deviantations thing. After all, having 0 favs on a deviantation is very discouraging or heartbreaking :3
It's fine to encourage people to comment by asking in the description, but going after people that fav and run and telling them to is rude. not everyone will have something to say other than "cool" or "nice", or are simply too shy.
Well, while I understand why people are being thirsty for having their work commented on, that doesn't mean one should consider favourites a bad thing. In fact, when I favourite someone's art I often say to myself 'what kind of comment would I add?', and I often find myself unable to leave anything because I'm either speechless or just too shy to add anything. But hey, there's a reason I favourited someone's work, right? Some people are just shy or don't have anything to say, are busy, etc. It's true that receiving criticism on your work from time to time it's satisfying, but why don't ask yourself, 'am I doing this solely to receive comments, or because I enjoy drawing and posting it for the world to see?'
people should be grateful for faves, as there is a chance that artwork will now be seen on another person's page (in their favorite section) and possibly seen by somebody who may not have come to their own page to begin with. It broadens the reach of their work, whilst a comment is good for the soul! Either / or for me is good.
I watch way too many people to comment on every deviation I see, besides, I don't even know what to say most of the time.
Like, when someone posts a drawing of their HARPG-horse, most of the time it doesn't really stand out among all the other HARPG-drawings so then I compliment him/her with faving it instead of commenting.
But lately I'm trying to comment more, especially on works that really stand out and which I really like, enough to comment on it.
Still, my personal opinion is that people shouldn't complain about getting more faves than comments. Everyone has that 'problem' and really, if someone only faves your drawing, it doesn't mean they like it less. It's just an easier way of saying 'I like your art'. I appreciate faves just as much as comments.
Yea, often it's pointless to comment when you don't know what to say either, because those comments are often the kind that I just don't have a reply to because they aren't saying anything in the first place, so no one really wins
But yes, everyone has this, and I don't know how people think they can change that? It's abit weird to me.
It's understandable to get frustrated about it, but yelling at your watchers is not going to get you authentic comments you're really just scaring/guilting your watchers into commenting on your art and they feel pressured to come up with something to write
Yea, I think people expect too much from others and often don't realize they are doing the exact same in the eyes of other people! It's easy to accuse other people, but to look at yourself and admit your own flaws can get you a long way.
I just don't get what you mean by gossiping? I'm not gossiping about specific people, many people do what I described here and I'm not targeting anyone in particular nor naming anyone? Adressing general habits of people that you think make no sense isn't the same as talking smack about one specific person behind their back, and if anyone in here takes offense to this poll because they do this, they are free to tell me their opinion on the topic!
It kind of frustrates me when that happens, especially because I rarely ever get comments. The most I usually expect on my art is one or two per deviantation. So it bothers me when I get a bunch of favorites and no comments.
I actually make a point not to favorite something unless I comment on it. There are only two deviantations in my favorites that I didn't comment on. So I expect the same in return, I guess.
I am grateful for faves, but I'd rather have comments.
