It depends how it's done but it can be pretty cool. Adds a physical presence to a side of a character's personality Some personal faves I can think of off the top of my head are monster series like Digimon (i.e. Guilmon's forced digivolution) and Pokemon, the Sonic franchise, shonen like Bleach, and even Berserk where the Berserker suit reflects his giving in to the tempation of blind bloodlust. I think generally if they have particular meaning I find they can be very memorable and effective. If it's just for the sake of it, they can come across as silly.
I think they're alright as long as they're not stereotypical as hell. Okami isn't perfect and Kurokami isn't totally bad, plus the latter represents my depression, so it actually has more sense than the overseen "iz bad cuz it iz!", imho xD
I dont mind them,I have one,and its more of a demon/side she doesnt want but has to cope with it.But she doesnt jump from one side to another,I dont like those characters.
Some times, that type of 'She turns evil and hurts another character and turns back imediatly and runs of hoping no one follows them', as that type draws to much attention to their character. I dont mind those who keeps their character balanced,or those who cant HELP turning evil such as werewolfs and vampires.

I think its just the embodiment of two sides of the whole person. This, however, does not mean one 'side' will not come in conflict with itself and,for lack of a better word, leave. Once one is gone, I would imagine that the remaining 'person' would become sane and have both good and bad in them. (Just imao)
There are several occasions in which they are creative, but to be honest with you...too many amateur writers and character designers rely on this formula because it's DAAAARK, and so they will look more serious, their character becomes more thought out, mature, and so on...or so as they think. I think they're not, and that's pretty much my opinion about amateur artists who tend to make so much gore and bloody pieces with the exact same intention. These kind of things rarely come out as creative and also rarely adds to the characters/story itself as far as I experienced. But...if you would like to increase your views...
