Small rant on ignorant pet owners that take a dog or cat and then put it on a vegan diet because they are vegan themselves and want their pets to adapt that lifestyle

37%
30 deviants said You can't just customize a pet's diet to your own wishes, you should always take into account what is good for the ANIMAL. NOT what YOU want it to eat.
16%
13 deviants said This just makes me super angry to see because it's SO selfish and you're actually starving your animal in a way, and making it very sick on purpose, if you do this.
15%
12 deviants said Pets require sacrifices, and feeding your pet the diet it needs is one of them. If you're not willing to do that you should not be a pet owner.
10%
8 deviants said You're drastically shortening your pet's life and keeping them unhealthy and miserable because of your own beliefs, which is something no good pet owner should do.
9%
7 deviants said Cats are strictly carnivorous and DO NOT NEED ANY PLANTS IN THEIR DIET AT ALL. They do require meat, and when not fed any, will go blind, develop heart problems, and eventually die.
5%
4 deviants said If you're against feeding your animals meat, don't get yourself a carnivorous animal. Get a bunny or goat, or another herbivore.
4%
3 deviants said For more info on feeding cats, this is a very useful site: catinfo.org/
2%
2 deviants said Cats and dogs are not humans and have different needs in terms of food. So just because something looks healthy for a human doesn't mean it's good for an animal.
1%
1 deviant said Dogs are closer to omnivores but it still isn't recommended to cut all meat from their diets like that. It still contains nutrients essential to them.
1%
1 deviant said Even if the animal seems fine at first, they are at risk of developing many health issues that you will be too ignorant to see until it's too late.

I didn't know people did that... I-- what??! That's so unhealthy for the animals. My family are all vegetarians for the most part,(don't worry, none of them shove vegetarianism down each others throats.) and I'm a huge tree hugging animal lover (I can't be vegetarian because of a medical condition, although I'd be vegan if I could. My friends say my strong opinions on the environment and animal cruelty make up for it, though. c:) And I can't believe people would do that, I've never heard of anything like that. People are usually vegan for the sake of animals, but doing that to their own pet could potentially be just as bad... I've heard of people switching foods because one of them has better ingredients or something simple and okay like that but this pisses me off on a great number of levels.
Thanks for making me aware of this, man, I've never heard of it.:/

Some people just...
Yes, it's not good for the animal to do that, at all. It's fine to switch to BETTER food, but this...

You're welcome D:

I agree so much omg and like

Aghhh pet ownerssssss nooo dont be bad pet owners please

My dog literally will steal cheese or a piece of my lettuce over a piece of chicken thats being set right in front of him to eat and its funny, and it's not like he doesnt eat meat, he'll scarf it down like its nothing, and he does eat quite a bit so we're not worried about him and we dont give him stuff he shouldnt unless he truly does come up a steal it out of our hands. And im sure he'd live on cheese if he had the choice (which would suck for anyone trying to out him on a vegan diet) but thank god he doesnt xD

As the owner of dogs myself and in my opinion, I say meat is a NECESSITY for dogs! I never thought anyone would personally do this to their dogs, but dogs these days need their protein and  meat is the best option. Not to mention most dog treats have essence of meat inside as well. D:

I saw the title of this rant and came here to contribute with all I got on the subject, but you already got everything I had in mind so I'll just say BLESS

Far more consequences than benefits on making your dogs eat food that doesn't provide them with essential nutrients.

tbh i think people who try to vegan-ize their pets are on par with people who smoke weed and blow smoke in their pet's faces. like, seriously? dogs deserve to live forever, not have u blowing bong smoke in ur animal's face like wtf

I mean, I have a snake. He doesnt eat much, but when he does, it isnt some artificial "VEGAN MOUSE" bullshit. the same should be true for other animals, only they eat more often.

Ugh that's messed up and unbelievably selfish. I have heard of something like this before but still.

My auntie's a strict vegan (to the point of not even buying leather) but she doesn't mind sitting at a table with people eating meat or anything, so I imagine she'd be fine with buying and feeding her pet meat if she had one :meow: she's also smart enough to know that cats and dogs need meat xD

Saw someone boasting that they're cat survived for a 'healthy four years' on a vegan diet.
Mate.
I have socks older than that.

I mean, sometimes we do feed my dogs things that dogs probably shouldn't eat (Never chocolate or fruits though) but i'd never be stupid enough to feed it on just that.

Social justice has gone insane.

yeah that's so dumb honestly
and it's a form of animal cruelty, too, and since lots of people go vegan because they don't want to support animal cruelty, i don't know why they would consider it a good idea. :stare:

Whenever my mum was cutting potatos shed drop a small piece for my older cat and she'd eat it |D
Or once my dad visited us and dropped a bit of the burger he was eating for my other cat, it was a bit of bread and meat, my cat ate the bread and ignored the meat :XD:
