If it's a drawing contest, I won't enter about 99% if I have to make a journal about it. I'm already posting a drawing that will include in the description that it's for a contest, so why would I need to further advertise? smh
If it's a giveaway, it's more of a 90% chance I won't enter.
I want to enter all of the things, and I've won a 3-mth premium membership, points, and some really cool art from journal-requiring giveaways, but I don't want to spam my watchers.

It depends on what all the requirements are i suppose. Like since I have hosted a contest once before my self, a lot of times the only way I can get a lot of entries is by having people advertise. And I guess I can understand wanting to do a contest to reward specifically your watchers for support, but combined with advertising it seems more like an attempt to get more popular.
I don't think it's really a raffle anymore if you AND need to be a watcher, AND need to favourite the journal, AND you have to advertise it. That's not a raffle, that's just trying to get more watchers. Just commenting on it (with being a watcher then of course) seems more than enough to me.
I thought so too, but according to my girlfriend that's how official raffles go: You get free art, they get exposure. I never saw it like that, I always just saw it as a fun way to give out free art...
Real raffles is just putting your name in a bowl and at the end a name gets picked out and wins. It's nothing more than that, really.
And it's not because "officially" you have to advertise it that you should. I personally prefer it way more if it's just for fun, not to gain watchers. Because if you advertise it, some people might just temporary watch you just to win at the raffle, and that would be terrible for your life-long watchers.
And for a contest I REALLY don't get it when you have to watch and advertise. I mean. The person already gets art from the participants but they also expect watchers AND exposure in return for... ? It makes little sense to me.
I dont mind. After its over or after some time I just remove the journal when Im on my weekly journal cleaning trip |D And for small contests its important or else no one else would notice it, thats why I made it a rule in my contest. And it did help For huge contests/raffles where theres already hundreds of people entering its kind of useless though. Also I dont like to enter big contests because alot of people judge by art skill and i dont like that. I just like ones where creativity is more important than skill because it gets unfair at a point, like "come try again when you have more skill" I was the first one to do a certain idea in a contest and spent so long on my picture but wasnt even in the honorable mentions, and an entry that had a similar idea to mine, posted after mine but had less meaning to it, won. I thought that was pretty unfair >:U So I will think more about whose contest I enter
It kinda makes me iffy, because I do not want the journal on my front page, because I need my commissions there..But then I would have to make a new journal, and put it so it only shows if you click "show all" from the journal section, and this usually makes me afraid the person holding a raffle (this does not usually happen during contests) looks for the journal after the winners are chosen and does not find it because it is not featured there? ._. Everyone should still get the journal in their inboxes, unless dA is glitching, but hh kjfdgkh
I think I have one journal that I have used for raffles for a while now, before my commission journals that does appear on the list... I just keep editing it, because I do not wish to post a new commission journal ._. Overall, I am not too fond of this "tradition", but I understand why people would do this.
It's just the fact that they say it's for their watchers, yet you still have to advertise it to strangers? Apparently it's a pretty common thing in raffles, that the person hosting it gets exposure and the raffle winner gets free art, but when I hold a raffle I don't wanna force people to watch me, I just wanna give out free art to random people...
