If people make something that is actually copyrightable, and they restrict access to that, then sure. It's their right as the copyright owners to restrict adaptation of their content.
However, whether or not a "cat-fox" is copyrightable content is questionable, and very unlikely in my unprofessional opinion.
But something like this could be copyrighted, I think. She made a whole species dubbed "Dewsquilli" and I can't see any direct resemblance to any existing creature (other than the obvious building blocks: bones, flesh, torso-limbs-head type stuff), so I'd say that qualifies as an original work that she now owns.
Sure, anyone sneaking a copy of some girl's creature design probably wouldn't be given much attention by authorities, but that doesn't mean it's not wrong to take from her what she wants to keep for herself. It's her right as the original creator and that right should be respected. In a perfect world...
There is also the fact that not a lot of "original species" out there are nearly as distinct as this one, and thus people will either not care about them or fight over how similar someone else's "species" looks to their "species" and who came up with it first, which is just silly, pointless and mind-numbingly tedious to watch unfold (which is why I don't delve into any of that~).

most of the 'made up species' look really dumb but i usually dont care because if the person made it up themselves its theirs to do what they like with it

If they are actually unique and special then it's a great idea! However, unless you spend the money to get the idea actually copyrighted, you can't FORCE someone to pay you for making a character of that species, so it's kinda pointless to try and sell the idea to others.

I think it's okay if you make a truly original and unique creature. However, by just mixing two species together or a dog and food there's a very high chance someone with no knowledge of your species creates one. I wouldn't pay for one unless it's really unique and has a lot of scientific research and thought behind it as i personally am not attached to many of my own characters/stories. Also I would not pay 100 dollars or even digits over 10 but that's just me personally and i really don't mind people who do this it's their choice and none of my business really

this one is my opinion EXACTLY:
I hate closed species, they can't be legally copyrighted unless you actually pay to get the copyright on them, so it's kinda stupid.
you cant just copyright a dog made of glass with liquid inside, or a cat with a flower on its body, or a fox with wings
some are okay, though, and i actually like a few

I'm not really an expert on the topic, but you don't have to pay to copyright something. As soon as you make the idea it's pretty much yours (it helps to be able to prove you were the origin of the idea), but you can't really copyright the idea of an existing animal, I'm sure. I bet there are limits to what one can copyright in this field (eg. photos of nature can't be copyrighted) but I don't know what they could be o3o;
I mean, a dog made of glass is sorta kinda "original" but at the same time not really, obviously. But rules about this kind of thing would've been hard to make, I'd say. They certainly exist, though. Maybe the answer is just one Google search away~

If you don't believe you don't have to pay for something you make to be copyrighted, think about the people who write "Character © me" in their deviation descriptions on this site. :3
If you're thinking of paying to own something, you might be thinking of trademarks.

It depends. I know a users who has an open species ( Yo-Angie's catfish species) and another who has a closed species (fennecfox). Personally, if I ever made a species, I'd make it open as long as they don't copy off the original design of the creators character)

It's the species name. They were once an eevee, but changed the species on e it developed it's own traits ( still loosely resembles one IMO )0

I'd guess it's a thing of status. If someone popular makes a "species", anyone who buys one would be automatically associated with that popular person by anyone who cared enough about the popular person and could recognise the species.
eg. [Not a Nekoi by Kawiku] (though this one isn't being sold, I think)
[Pompups Auction [Closed] by Kawiku]
Notice it says "Pompups are a closed species." at the bottom of the description.

Mix of animals or animals with food/plants is like nothing original to me. I mean its two existing things put together, and look at how many food related characters or species there is. I dont think its worth spending money on them and I think they are highly overrated, but whatever floats their boat.
I know a certain pony artist that used to tell people that they copied their species when literally everyone could come up with a plant pony. "Its closed speshies pay ridiculous amount of points to make hurr". Incredible how no one has called them out on it yet. Also technically mlp ponies dont belong to them anyway.
fav.me/d7jg1z4

For actual original species its fine. Like original design idea, story, ect. A friend of me has a species called Shadowsonas, their concept is simple but yet unique but people used to make many mistakes when designing them so she decited to make it a closed species, shes the only one to design them wich solves the issues of people making mistakes.
My species is open because I thought they were pretty simple so people shouldnt have to pay for it. And there isnt that many mistakes you can make x3 Only demonic ones arent open because their design rules are more limited so I sell them as adopts.

Haha yeah. I think claiming the right on a mix of an animal and any existing thing is kind of stupid (unless you add something really unique to it like idk a specific body shape or multiple arms or idk)
