Description
Established in 1869, this combination department includes 29 career and 16 volunteer firefighters who respond to 4,000 runs each year. Uniquely, each of the 29 dedicated firefighters are also trained Paramedics. MFD provides Fire, Tactical Rescue, Hazmat and ALS protection to 75 square miles and 13,500 residents in the City of Montcalm and surrounding Union Township. MFD provides ALS services to all of Shorewood fire department's area as well. MFD is home to Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Rescue 1, Ladder 1, Tanker 1, Squad 1, The Community Paramedic, Medic 4, Medic 6, Medic 8, and command 1.
Engine 1: (1500gpm/750gal) This unit served as the primary engine for calls within city limits until 2016. It now serves as a reserve/training engine.
Engine 2: (1500gpm/1000gal) This engine serves as the rural engine and responds on all fire calls outside of town. It also responds as the primary mutual aid engine
Engine 3: (500gal/2000gpm) This engine responds first out for calls within city limits.
Rescue 1: This unit responds first out for all rescue calls. It also responds as automatic aid to Shorewood for vehicle crashes with entrapment and all agricultural rescues county wide.
Ladder 1: This unit responds to all fire calls in downtown Montcalm. It is staffed by volunteers when needed outside of town.
Tanker 1: (1250gpm/2500gal) Tanker 1 is usually staffed by volunteers. It responds to all rural fires.
Squad 1: (750gpm/300gal) Squad 1 responds to all vegetation fires. It also serves as a manpower unit for large incidents.
Community Paramedic unit: This unit is staffed Mon-Fri and responds to lower acuity calls. This unit can defer PT to alternate destinations other than the ER for various complaints.
Medic 4: This ambulance primarily responds to calls within the town limits. MFD staffs 2 paramedic ambulance 24/7
Medic 6: MD06 responds to the rural areas of MFD's coverage area. The Crews of each medic unit can switch to fire units as needed based on each call.
Medic 8: This unit is a reserve ambulance for MFD.
Command 1: This truck is staffed 24/7 by the on duty battalion chief. It responds to any incident that requires three or more apparatus from MFD.
