Description
Gadsen Police Department (GPD) is a full-time police agency that services all of the city of Gadsen. GPD is made up of 20 Sworn officers and 9 civilian employees. GPD keeps 5-6 officers on duty at all times. GPD's specialized units include: K-9, SWAT, Investigations, Dive Team, and Marine Units.
Patrol Division: GPD keeps 3-4 Patrol officers on duty at any time. Each of the 4 shifts work 12 hour rotations on a 2-2-3 schedule. Patrol Officers serve as members of the Swat, Dive, and Marine patrol teams. When each team is needed Officers will respond in their patrol vehicles to the scene. Patrol Officers are assigned a Dodge Charger, Dodge Durango, or Ford Explorer.
Field Leadership: Each shift is staffed with one supervisor (Corporal or Lieutenant). These officers are responsible for standard shift operations. In addition to daily operations, each supervisor serves as the commander for a specialized team (K-9, SWAT, Marine, and Dive) Each Supervisor is assigned a slick-top Ford Explorer
K-9 Division: The K-9 unit is made up of three officers and their K-9 partners. These units are on a swing shift to provide optimal coverage for shifts. Each K-9 is trained in Interdiction, Tacking, and Drug searches. Each K-9 officer is assigned a specialized Ford Explorer
Investigations division: The Investigations division is made of up two sworn detectives and a civilian assistant. The detectives and the assistant work M-F 9-5. Each detective will respond on an on-call basis and are supplemented by county and state detectives as needed. Each Detective is assigned an unmarked Dodge Charger.
Crime Scene/Forensics: With an all civilian staff that reports to the Investigation Division, Crime Scene/Forensics is responsible for the collection, processing, assessing and inventorying of all evidence. Crime scene techs respond in an unmarked Ford F150 to major crime scene. For small evidence, it is collected and brought to the station for processing.
Dive Team: The dive team is made up of 6 members that respond as needed to dive incidents throughout the city. When a dive incident occurs, one officer will respond to the station to pick up the dive van (Ford Transit) The Dive van is equipped with all the equipment needed for dive rescue and recovery incidents in non-flowing water.
SWAT: 8 members make up the GPD SWAT team. These officers all carry their SWAT equipment in their assigned patrol units. Similar the to Dive Team, when a SWAT callout occurs, one officer will respond to the station to pick up the Bearcat and respond to the scene.
Marine Unit: 6 members make up the marine unit. These members will staff the police boat during high traffic weekends and special events on the water. During other times, the members will respond to the marina to staff the boat during water rescue calls. GPD's marine unit works hand in hand with the Gadsen Fire Dept. on water rescue incidents.
