Mercenary
I do freelance as well as my full time job, and I am always setting up the next job.  it's a safe bet, that if i'm breathing, I'm painting or hustling to get paid for more painting.  That's what I do for a living.  It's how I put food on the table, and porn in the bathroom.
That said, I thought it bore mentioning especially here on DA though, that I work for HIRE.  If your sweet RPG project, or video game pitch has no budget at all for art, it will save both of our time if you don't try to tap me for artwork.  I Do realize I'm passing up an amazing opportunity for me to make my portfolio way more awesome, and that I won't be getting that free publicity.  It's a risk I'll have to take.
I'm not opposed to people making things out of their garage, in fact, I wholesale endorse it and want you to succeed with it.  I sincerely hope your team is a massive success.
I can't work for free though.

Why I don't do commissions
I might have had this on my journal a few years ago but I have been getting a lot of questions why I don't make a living doing commission portraiture?
When I was in art school I my goal was to make a living from my art. I thought it would be wonderful to get up in the morning and just paint and draw. At first I supplemented my income by, teaching and working in picture frame stores. Soon I started to get lots of portrait commissions, at first just in here in Michigan, then Chicago. So my wife and I packed our bags and moved to windy city. Portraits Chicago a very exclusive agency for commission portraiture represented me. I started making great money, and for the next two years I was never without work, but I was miserable!
Art, my sanctuary, the very thing that gave me such pleasure was now reduced to paintings of corporate bigwigs wanting to look important in cliché posses, pipe in hand, arm on an overstuffed chair and so on. I had very little input on the creative side. I was t

Excuse me~
Your art is very much gorgeous, and I couldn't help but to let you know that, though you might know it already.
I really am sorry for bothering you with this message, and I realize you might not want to be bothered by a random person on your page...but I'm having my first contest ever, and if you don't mind, I would like to ask you to help me by donating some prizes.
The prizes could be anything, assuming you would help donating, from Premium Membership(s), point(s), artwork(s), literature(s), icon(s), favorite(s), llama(s), or something else you might have in mind.
I will put the information regarding the contest on my journal once I gathered enough prizes, and I will let you know as soon as I do.
It would be greatly appreciated if you're willing to help! Though of course I understand if you couldn't~
Thank you for taking some time to read this message ^_^

I'd gladly donate a small print of one of my paintings. Winner's choice, of course.

Oh, thank you so much! :iconloveloveplz: It's very much appreciated! One more thing I'd like to ask: Since there will be three winners, would you prefer to donate to all three, or just to one/two of them? ^_^

Lol thank you for the birthday and commission love! =D You should come to Saboten! I will definitely be there. If not, though, I'll see you at Taiyou Con or Con-Nichiwa next year! =D And...I'm glad you really like your commissions. That means a lot to me as an artist ^_^

It would be really great if I can make it to Saboten, so I'll try my best. :D But, at the very least, I know I'll see you again a year from now at Con-nichiwa, so that's good. :3
I've been showing the commissions off to all my friends, they're just as impressed as I am by them. I look forward to seeing your art continue to improve between now and the next con.. and will have to keep commissioning you as it does! :D
