This piece was inspired by traditional tales of the Wilde Jagd (German for "Wild Hunt") gleaned from various sources, and specifically by a particular entry describing Frau Goden as the main huntress of this spectral procession in German folklore. "Goden" is likely a morphing of the name of the God Woden/Odin who was also said to lead the Wild Hunt in Teutonic lore, and She is likely His female counterpart. Frau Holda in some cases also takes this role.

The Wild Hunt in various forms existed across many European cultures as a group of hounds and riders spilling out from the Otherworld in a fevered search for souls. These faery hounds are often said to be either black or white with red-tipped ears.

In my depiction of this fey mistress she carries a horn inscribed with Norse knotwork, and woven through her fingers she balances a stone-tipped arrow. In the past, the discovery of Neolithic arrowheads was often attributed to faery craftsmen. The fey were said to use such arrowheads in the infliction of the "elf-shot" or "elf-blow" which could cause immediate paralysis and indicated that the soul of the person or animal wounded had been carried off by Them, leaving only a physical shell behind.

Size: 4.5" x 6"
Media: Prismacolor colored pencils, acrylic, ink, and watercolor on wood panel (the actual panel has semi-circular shapes which are cut out of each corner)

Thank you. Trying to balance the flesh and skull in the hound was difficult, but I'm fairly pleased with it.

Thank you very much, that is a wonderful link. I'm very familiar with the Endicott Studio website, but I do not believe I've had the opportunity to read that particular article.

No problem, your livejournal was actually recommended to me by Dr. Berk. Plus I thought the article fit with the subject matter, hehe.

Are you a friend/colleague of Dr.Berk? I really admire his work, so it is quite an honor for him to recommend my livejournal. His foreword to Froud's new book World of Faery touched upon many of the issues I have been writing about for some time.

I absolutely ADORE you're use of color ^^

I wish I could see this in real life, because I have the feeling my computer is hiding a lot of the details ):

But I still love what of the color I can see ^^ How the cools fade into the warms. Oh and the skeletons are very well done! So detailed, yet gradual. I almost didn't even notice ^^

It's so good to see some more new work from you. I admit I usually hope it's you who has posted new art when I am notified of new deviations on my list.

This is beautiful and I like how the texture of the wood shows through in some areas, adding a little extra something to the piece.

Wow, this is gorgeous!! I agree with an earlier commenter who said that the woman looked very eastern, that was my first thought too!:)

I like the details such as the brambles behind her which are also slightly encircling her neck, and I like the skeletal details, too.

Overall this piece is just amazing and stunning!:)

The brambles are actually what is holding the horn around her neck, but I also wanted them to be a background element.

I really enjoy the female figure, she has very eastern features. Kind of a Buddha face, and the blue skin puts me in mind of Hindi deities.
I love the skin tones, and the transparent hound just rocks. Terrific.

It might interesting to see more of the woodgrain showing through on some parts though. - hard to say with not being able to see it in person though.

Great work, love the spirit of it.

I agree, I wish the woodgrain would show more through some of the painting. The grain on this panel was pretty even, but one can definitely see more of it in person. I think I may need to rescan this piece.
