Description
Built in 1906, this locomotive was built for the Duluth Missabe and Northern railroad, as No. 332. It was given slow freight service. It is an example of the most numerous steam locomotive design in the United States. Around the 1940's over 33,000 2-8-0 "Consolidation" locomotives were delivered across the country. In 1938, the Duluth Missabe and Northern railroad merged with the Duluth and Iron range railroad to form the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range railroad. 332 was then used to pull Iron ore trains until the larger yellowstone locomotives took over the Iron ore service. 332 was then in yard and local train service. In 1955, the engine was sold to the Duluth and Northeastern railroad and was re-numbered to 28. The engine was then used to pull freight trains until being retired in 1964. occasionally the locomotive would pull special excursion trains. The engine was then sold to the Lake Superior Railroad museum in 1974. In 2011, 28 was brought back to the Cloquet Terminal railroad and after 5 years of hard work, the engine was restored to operational condition. In 2019, it was re-numbered back to 332, and is the only operating DMIR steam locomotive and the only steam engine in operational condition at the Lake Superior Railroad. The engine usually pulls the special excursion train from Duluth to Two Harbors.
