Bulletproof Issue One Preview by spacehamster Bulletproof Issue One Preview by spacehamster
If you're just tuning in, these are the first six pages of the comic I'm working on. It's called Bulletproof, and, err... I've been blathering about it all over this page lately, so go look. ;)

*phwew*
Like I said, I kinda wanted to have this finished by the end of last week, but it took me another four days, mostly because page 6 took forever to color, which didn't surprise me, but it still almost drove me insane. I've regretted my decision to do this thing in color more than once over the past few weeks, but it's a decision I thought about long and hard, and honestly, I don't think it would work in black and white at all. It's just that the coloring literally doubles the time it takes me to get these damn pages done.

Still, doing these six pages was a ton of fun, and I'm itching to get crackin' on the rest. I've learned a million little things from doing this stuff, it has improved my technique all around on all levels, and most of all - it's something that keeps me glued to the drawing board for hours on end because there's always something to do, especially if you work like I do and make sure to always have one page at every stage of the process, so that when I feel like inking, I can ink, when I feel like coloring, I can color - you get the idea. Of course now I don't have anything penciled because I just wanted to get this f'n thing done.

Anyway, please let me know what you think. This is the first sequential work I've done in a long time, the first I've put this much effort into and the first I've ever done in color, so I don't know what the hell I'm doing, and I need you guys to tell me what works and what doesn't.

Pencil, brush, various pens, Wacom.

It's funny, I always thought the writing would be the problem for me, but actually it's not... turns out my biggest strenght is dialogue, NOT action scenes.

It's not so much writing them as drawing them that I have a problem with... it's just a nightmare from the technical point of view. Everything has to be extreme angles and foreshortening and whatnot, otherwise it doesn't work.

Thanks - crap, I really need to finish this thing soon. I only have a few pages left to color, but I haven't made any progress in a while. Sigh.

It reminds me of X-Men, sort of. But then again, superhero-type comics do tend to be similar. I like it.

You have a knack for the comic-book style of art. The first page was like :heart:__:heart: Seriously, the black shading on his torso... :3 Even with just this, I have to say that he's now officially my favorite character. Love it. I'm not as fond of the red-head though. Though that changes on each page. She looks better as each page goes by, and my favorite shot of her is when she's looking out the window. ;) Love the main chick's hair too. And her facial expression when she has her fist up to her mouth. *snickers* Very well captured. All in all, wonderful comic. Everything flows perfectly. :D

Thanks! Megan's (the redhead) look may be fluctuating a bit because to be honest, I didn't do enough design sketches of any of these characters before I started with the actual pages. *cough*

Wait a sec...why's the comic called "Bulletproof" if the character is called "Shockwire"?

Dude, that opening page is killer. Made my friggin' eyes bug outta' my head when I saw that. Shit still hurts so thanks.

Only negative crit I got is concerning the last panel of page six. It seems a bit rush in relation to the pedestrians. I'd take another look at their hands and arms especially.

Other than that, though, I'm really diggin' this and can't wait to see the next installment.

chris

Yeah, I dunno, those folks running away from Skulhedd came out looking kinda crappy. I thought I could get away with it, but usually when you think that, you can't.

And it's called Bulletproof because future stories (which I don't know if I'll ever get around to, but I really, really want to) will be about other characters. It'll all tie together and be set in Junction City, but this one's just to get the ball rolling.

Anyway, thanks for the fav and all that good stuff. Glad you like it.

It's pretty easy to shortcut figures that are in the background. Figures in the foreground are near impossible to do so with.

I like what I've read so far so I'm interested to see what other concepts you have cookin' down the road. Oh yeah, I wanted to note that I thought you did a good job with the dialouge in making it both funny, intersting and realistic. Plus you threw in some profanity which I always enjoy.

later,

chris

Yeah, live and learn, I guess. I was kinda thinking along the lines that Skulhedd's the main focus attention, so there didn't need to be (and maybe shouldn't be) too much cluttering up the people running from him, but as you can see by the borderline overrendering I ended up doing when I colored it, I eventually realized that I was wrong.

Glad to hear the dialogue worked for you - it's kind of important for the rest of the story that that sequence holds up.

Thanks for the fav!

I'm going with the American format here, so one issue is 22 pages. This story is two parts, so it's going to be 44 pages total. The plan is to make this an ongoing thing, I'll move on to other characters when the first Shockwire story's done. But we'll see what happens. It's probably going to take forever to get one of these done. Don't know about publication yet either, I haven't given it much serious thought, really... I'm just having fun at the moment. We'll see what happens when I have a more substantial amount of pages done.

very nice, I love the whole colossus arm's thing, you really nailed them. The computer grids at the top were my personal favourite, you've hit them on the nose, and they look fantastic.

Congrats on 100!!!!!!!

Thanks! Man, I completely forgot about the 100 deviations thing, I was glued to the computer coloring page six for so long today it was the only thing I could think about.

Glad to hear the computer stuff works for you... I kinda felt like I was taking a chance with that, I really didn't know if I could pull it off, and if I'd hit a roadblock there, I would've been utterly screwed...
