Rom #0 Cover for FCBD

My first Rom cover.  I'll be the regular series cover artist as well.

I designed this cover so the logo would fit over the sun, but underneath Rom's hand.  I tend to get bored with traditional covers so I usually try to mix it up somehow.

I was about to make a joke about how that guy looks like he is doing that one nazi salute thing, but apperantly DeviantArt doesn't have any "Heil Hitler" emoticons... who would've thought Shrug

well i'm sorry to say the ROM zero issue was pretty underwhelming.

well we finally got a good look at ROM from the Preview pages earlier this week and i have to say i'm quite disappointed. his armor design deviates quite a bit (and not for the better) from what you have going on here on the cover.

sad to hear - I haven't seen anything but the character specs i was given to draw from.  i'm sorry the interiors didn't work out for you, but i haven't no connection to that.  I know before i got the specs that his armor seemed to be changing daily, so i wouldn't be surprised if there were more changes.  not always the artists' fault, but again, i haven't seen it so i don't know what i'm commenting on.

sorry man, these licensed properties can be a monster to get going - lots of people with strong undefined opinions and the creators have to figure that out while working.  I have faith in Chris Ryall to take care of his baby, and i hope the artwork gets better for you.  Rom is a nightmare to draw so maybe with a little practice the artists will improve. =)  just takes a little practice.

It sounds to me like when they handed you those specs they pretty had it just right and then for whatever reason had to keep fucking with. I hope you'll take the time to have a look at what they ended up with when you have the time but in a nut shell try to picture Frankenstien in a suite of armor. Thanks for the prompt reply.

so you're not just the cover artist but also the interior artist as well huh? you're Massina if i'm not mistaken? anyways, that's re-assuring aside from good writing this book needs to be illustrated well in order to make an impact with prospective new readers who are going to be checking out the new series. as for the the old school ROM fans who will be clamoring for it we had to suffer through the last year of steve ditko's awful interior pencils in the original series.
Spacefriend-KRUNK's avatar
no, and nope!  sadly i don't know who is drawing the interiors. =(

however, i'm sure Chris picked someone who can handle it! =)

this is what it says in the art work description "My first Rom cover.  I'll be the regular series artist as well. " did you mean strictly cover art by "regular series art"?
Spacefriend-KRUNK's avatar
oops - i'll fix that.  i'm the regular series cover artist.  sorry about that!  and thanks for the info.

ok thanks for clearing that up, one other thing if you don't mind. over at the ROM spaceknight blog a fellow left this comment in regards to your ROM zero issue cover art i'd like to know your response . . .

"Well I have a couple quibbles beyond the fingers. I'm cool with the hands but that upper chest armor looks too big, like ROM is wearing his dad's shirt. The bits that jut out from either side of his neck seem waaay too tall and angular. If they were going to soften the edges a bit they should have done it to the entire armor and not just the face! I hope this is just the artist's unique style or exaggerated perspective and not an indication of what the character design is really going to look like."

i didn't design the character.  and a human that would post that is not someone i need interact with.  When people are unhappy with their own life, the critique others' accomplishments. If the short-stroking gut-monster that wrote this has a problem with the current incarnation of the character, tell them to contact IDW - they hired an artist to work with Hasbro to redesign the character.

I worked with the designs given.  yes, i chose to push the perspective to add interest to a shitty looking boxy character.  i feel i did a successful job with the character i was given, and 99.9% of the responses i have seen have been syrupy positive.  Tell your forum poster acquaintance to feel free to never stop eating dicks.

Well the toy was shitty looking and Steve dictko's penciling made Rom shitty looking in the comic. But he looked great when artists like Sal Buscema and Michael Golden penciled him. Anyways, I'm cool with your cover art but I'll pass along your .... "feed back" to the other guy.

Rom cover???? So this is a reboot of an old comic... What a beefy handsome bot. Nice.
I hate how american comics has an awesome artist make the covers and then the inside is completely different style. Its such a tease.
Spacefriend-KRUNK's avatar
it's definitely odd!  I think Arthur Adams calls it false advertising. ;)

False Advertising, lol yes that is the best way to describe it.
