Valley of the Perytons, Barrier Peaks The frigid mountain wind tugged at Shelagh’s hair, clothing, and most significantly her large membranous wings, tempting her into flight. It came knifing down from the snow-choked peaks with a thin, keening whistle, sharp enough to sting her cheeks and set her eyes watering. She kept her wings folded tightly against her back, feeling the press of wind against the taut skin between their bones, and planted her feet more firmly against the rocks, lest a sudden gust force the issue. Above the peaks, half a score of peryton bucks circled lazily, their great eagle-like wings catching the chill wind. Ahead lay a vast edifice of stone, steel, and glass, sprawled across the terminus of the valley road like a fortress. Even from the secure perch Oktha chose high among the surrounding cliffs, the place looked impossibly large. Multiple arched halls ran side by side beneath a roof of green-black metal. It’s a strange test, throwing a newly bought Kukuri into the Coliseum where many trained fighters were. Even stranger was the fact that someone was throwing a newly purchased kukuri into the coliseum when all the arenas were changing from week to week. They weren’t even normal arenas anymore, but that didn’t seem to matter to the handlers. They signed Ciren up without hesitation, saying this would test his mettle for the ‘Crimson Shadows’, whoever they were. Well, that was fine by him. Ciren was born to fight. As his handlers lead him to the iron gate that separated him from the arena, he had a moment to reflect on what he was seeing before him. Many fighters looked forward to the Carnival of Life every year. It was one of many reasons to test one’s strength. Aren was no different. He had participated in the Carnival in the past, willing to go up against some of the toughest opponents he could imagine. The highlight of it would have to have been his battle and subsequent victory against Cerberus, the proclaimed Champion of Life herself. How he had defeated the three-headed prairie, he wasn’t sure, but Aren mostly chalked it up to his experience and determination. With this year’s Carnival rolling into town, the rook was determined to relive the experience. He not only wanted to go against Cerberus again - he wanted to win and prove that their last battle hadn’t been a fluke. Signing up wasn’t difficult at all. When his battle rolled around, he was quick to head down to the gates, wasting no time in stepping onto the battleground. He could barley contain himself as the arena organizers lead him to the gate, and even through the bars, he could feel the chill of the arena.
