Well, My birthday is on Friday.  I guess I'll start with that.  I'll be TWENTY-ONE. God that makes me feel old.  What have I done with myself? Nothing, really.  I guess I'll keep trying with that whole art... thing... though.

Anyway, :iconphengophobic: bought me another sub for my birthday-- thank god.  The ads were really starting to get to me.  Now I'll be able to stand visiting and updating more often. And speaking of UPDATING, I update my blog every now and then, if anyone is interested:

Let me know if you have a blog too.  We can STALK each other. Oh boy!

That's all. Continue.

Remember how I said we sold our comic at Otakon?  Well now we set it up for purchase online!

It's about 100 pages and has 5 different comics for only 15$.  It'd mean a lot to all of us if you snagged a copy-- I'll sign it for you if we ever meet, of course :B

Thanks for reading!

Hey. I just realized the last time I updated my deviantart journal was before Otakon '07-- and now I've already gone to Otakon '08.  Whoopsies!

So we had a table this time, me and some friends of mine of school.  We were selling copies of our self-published comic anthology entitled 'Hatch.'  It sold pretty well considering the crowd it was being exposed to and overall was a very successful experiment.  This year we're working to make Hatch vol. 2 even bigger and more filled with new talent! So in short, you should have bought it while we were there, because you totally missed out.  Some friends of mine from home stopped by and chilled behind the tables, etc.  It was grand. And freezing.

This year my curriculum focuses almost entirely on illustration work, so I'm going to practice the shit out of my techniques (painting, especially).  I'll try and post work.  Keep in touch!

An underclassman recently interviewed me for their Graduation Project (which is pretty much the same project that I did way back when).  By reading it, you may learn something new about me!

An Interview between :iconsoundninja: and :iconbezmo:

The HH is me.  Hunter Heckroth.

1.)Q: What is your definition of the term "manga"? What do you know about the history?
HH: Manga, literally in Japanese, means comic or printed cartoon.  In the west though, it's come to mean any serial, story-oriented graphic novel drawn in the eastern style of comic art.  That's pretty much how I interpret it.  Also, these aren't kid comics or anything.  In Japan, manga can be very gory and very much intended for an adult audience, even going so far as to be graphic novel porn (hentai :P).  The attitude towards comics in the US has always been different, as far as I can tell.

2.)Q: What got you into mangas and comics (creating/reading)?
HH:  Oh, I don't remember that.  I suppose I got into anime first.  You know, Pokemon, DragonballZ, Yu-Gi-Oh.  Kid Stuff.  Then I started buying the mangas for Dragonball.  It's completely different.  The art is ten times better (Akira Toriyama is a god), the story moves quickly, and you really start to respect the sole person who spent half of their life drawing nearly fifty 100-200 page books.  I never feel that way about anime (unless it's Miyazaki quality a la 'Spirited Away').

3.)Q: Did you ever make your own manga/comic?
HH: I recall making my own comic for this same project.  It's tough (and if I look back at it, it's pretty bad, too).  My friends and I have often come up with ideas for comics or even webcomics, which are becoming increasingly popular.  It requires a level of determination and work ethic that I have yet to muster.  You really have to push yourself!  We're going to make a manga club here at [SCHOOL] and, inevitably, publish some of our work-- See how that goes.

4.)Q: What kinds of materials did you use?
HH: Hmm...  I drew it all on computer paper (that's been dubbed A4 size) with just regular old pencils and pens-- No hardcore name brands or anything.  I compiled each panel and page, including text and boxes and such, in photoshop on my computer.  This is a pretty bad method of working.  You should always work on the entire page at once-- it's the flow of the page that matters.  When you finish, any single page should be a work of art!

5.)Q: What kind of techniques/styles did you employ into your creation?
HH: It was entirely black and white, so there wasn't a whole lot of color implementation.  Inking though.... I'm sure you know of hatching?  I combined hatching and the animation style of cel shading.  I ended up with hatched shapes denoting darker areas, which works for me.  Eventually, I was under such time constraints that I worked in only pen and totally disregarded pencil work.  This was a pretty awesome learning experience-- and most of my work nowadays I do in entirely ink.  It has a fresh, dark feel to it, much like the etchings of the old masters.

6.)Q: What were some brand names of art supplies you preferred using?
HH:  Ah-- I didn't have any, really.  Were I to do one now though I'd probably heavily abuse those Faber-Castell brush pens you mentioned.  Such versatility!  My usual pen choice is the generic kind you buy at Staples (they're staples brand, actually).  They're .5 mm tipped, and very inky, which I love.  Also, they come in packs of like... 8, which is great (and cheap). If I colored anything, I'd probably do it digitally (with a Wacom tablet), which is the way most professional comic book artists work nowadays anyway.

7.)Q: What kind of a storyline did you use and what was it like?(novel or short story and the genre, etc)
HH: It was meant to be a serial, long story.  My friend wrote it, so I didn't know where it was going in the end.  It was sort of a mix of sci-fi and modern-fantasy-fiction... that sort of thing.  Often, in US comic work (like marvel or DC), jobs like writing and drawing are split.  In fact, penciling and inking are split, so is coloring.  Japanese manga though... it's usually a one-man team.  He/She's the writer, artist, sponsor, everything!

8.)Q: How long did it take you(hours, days months etc..)?
HH:  It took forever.  I'm sure you can attest to this.  It doesn't help to be nitpicky about drawing either. Oh boy.  I worked way over that required hours thing.  Honestly, too--  Working hard at my desk.  I knew people who were struggling to find something to occupy their remaining hours for this project (or making things up).  It doesn't flow that way for us artists.  It probably didn't help that I procrastinated, either.

9.)Q: What kinds of problems did you run into while making it?
HH:  Hmm. Time constraints?  Keeping my papers organized?  I drew every panel on a separate sheet of paper-- and that's a mistake I'll never make again.

10.)Q: How did it turn out? Were you pleased or displeased? Why?
HH:  In the end I was pleased.  My presentation was pretty long too (like 45 minutes)-- yours will be as well, probably.  I know I could've done better though-- I think that's a feeling every artist gets.  We always have to strive to improve.  I do, anyway.  I'm never totally satisfied.

11.)Q: If you had the time, money and the chance to make one again, what would you improve on it and WOULD you make another manga?
HH:  If I had the time and money, I'd love to spend my entire life drawing traditional manga.  I know many who would say the same, even if it was just something like a weekly webcomic.  That's the thing-- when you're an artist, a true artist, you can give everything to your work.  The amount of hours I spent on this project was ridiculous-- it was close to a hundred I think, but I honestly can say it felt like only 20.  It's never work when you do something you truly love.  I don't think I'd improve that manga though.  It's as finished as it will ever be, and it wasn't my idea, either.  I'd write my own, I think.  Plus, by now, I've lost all of the digital files of the pages, the original pages, and the story, even.  I guess I'm pretty disorganized.  Always back up your digital work!

12.)Q: How long have you been an artist?
HH:  This is in every artist interview-- And everyone says the same thing.  I've always been an artist.  Haven't you?  You can surely find the art in anything you do.  You just have to look at life with a different eye.

13.)Q: What other kinds of art are you into?
HH:  Illustration (Ohh illustration!), etchings, and especially digital art.  I want to be a digital painter some day for some video game, but don't think I'll ever stop my traditional ink sketching :3 is a great site.

14.)Q: Do you have a favorite manga or comic artist that has influenced you or inspired you? If so, then who and why?
HH: Yukito Kishiro, the artist for Battle Angel Alita (which I STRONGLY recommend) is one of my favorites right now.  Akira Toriyama, the Dragonball artist, has always been a favorite as well (he does some video game art as well, like Dragonquest or Chrono Trigger... or Blue Dragon).  Penny Arcade, the webcomic, is always inspiring, especially to my nerdy side.  As far as classical artists go, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo are my favorites, especially for their drawings/etchings and not their paintings!  Also, Hayao Miyazaki, the world renowned animator of films like Spirited Away, Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, etc. I think can be considered inspirational to pretty much anyone who's watched his films.

15.)Q: Is there anything else you could possibly tell me about mangas or anything you can tell me in general about anything that you think would help me succeed in my graduation project?
HH: The more you read, the better you will become.  The best manga artists I know here have read ten times more manga than I have.  Everything you do-- everything you experience!-- will ultimately affect your artistic work.  It may not be readily apparent right now, but as you grow and keep working, you'll notice this sort of thing.  Make sure you mention your sources in your speech!  I forgot to do that until the end, haha.

Hope I helped you out!  Good Luck!

That was pretty long!

I realize I never update this place, and that's because I never scan my sketchbook, really.

Which isn't to say that I'm not aptly equipped to do so here at school, I'm just a big lazy ass.

Anyway, I've been taking pictures of all (or most) of the things I do here, and you can look at them on my blog:

Or you can simply click the link down below my deviantID.

A word of caution though: These are not like what you normally see me doing.  These are all assigned works or fine art, nothing fan-arty or anime-inspired whatsoever.

That's also where my new Avatar came from.

I'm now at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York (city).  They keep me busy here, sorry I havn't had time to submit anything and/or comment on anyones stuff.  I've...

I've just been hella busy.

I'm meeting other people with the same goals as myself though, which is fantastic.  I feel like I'm headed down a path of awesome and win.

Anyone get a Wii?  MAN I want one.
The PS3 disappoints me greatly (and I hope it does the same to you).  I think now I like Microsoft more than Sony, which is a first.  I mean, yes, when XIII comes out we'll all need to get one, regardless of price.  But right now things aren't looking too hot.

I'm 55 hours into FFXII.  It is delicious, for your information.

I turned 19 in November (the 14th), in case anyone was curious.

Hmm... what else...  Well... I dunno.  Maybe I can do some more work over Christmas Break.  After goddamn finals.

Merry Christmas guys (Happy Holidays, whatever).
Hope everyones doin' O.K.

Yoink! Stolen from Wind--Walker.

I really need to put something in here, don't I?

DeviantArt Survey
Just answer the following questions.

1) What is your deviant-name and what does it mean?
It was influenced by Naruto (adur), because I loved the Sound Ninjas' techniques during the chuunin exam.  However, since, I have lost fanboy-hood of the show as well as lost interest in the sound group.  But man, those sound wave arm things were badass.

2) Why did you join this site?
Uhhh... Probably because of Wind--Walker.  Before that, the site had looked far too daunting.  Then, Kiey kinda spurred me onward as well.

3) What fandom were you obsessed with when you joined?
Naruto, lolz.

4) Were any of the fandoms you have currently brought about by this site?

5) Look into your stats. What is your:
- Most Favorited Deviation: "Hughes," with 26 favourites

- Most Viewed Deviation: "Hughes," with 450 views (I can't understand why it was so popular)

- Most Commented Deviation: "Pandaren," with 79 comments

Procrastinator!  It's what I'm doing right now!

10) What is your most "meaningful" work?
My self portrait-- It's not on here... yet.

11) Best COMPLETED piece you ever did?
Also, self portrait :P

14) What is currently the thing you enjoy drawing the most?
Warriors :P  Really, character design is my favorite ++

15) Easiest thing to draw?

16) Your first ever giftart was to:… for Photosprite or… for Recoom... or… for Kiey.

17) First ever giftart received was from:
I totally forget.  Probably Recoom, in return for the drawing I did for him.

18) How many clubs are you in?
I'm active in none, really.  The only I'm enrolled in at the bottom of this journal aren't very intensely active, but they represent what I enjoy.

19) How long have you been here?
Since Aug 18, 2004, at 4:16 PM.

20) Are you on any other art sites?
SA, but I quickly forgot about that. (likewise, wind--walker).

21) Can you remember the old DA layout?
Vaguely. :P

22) Are you still as passionate about art/poetry/prose as when you joined this site?
Ridiculously so.

So there you are folks.  I posted a journal for you and for me.  For everyone.

Also, The Wii kicks ass-- I just thought you'd do well to keep that in mind.

At long last, my computer, realizing it was beginning to overheat, has reached a mangled, decrepid, mechanical forearm out of the depths of Hell and graced me with its wisdom once more.

─But no, it could never accomplish such a task on its own.  To escape from the fiery pits of sin and squalor, he (if it is, indeed, a he) needed the aid of the mightiest of heroes.  This was no mere archangel─ no mere divine force.  It came instead from the holiest of holy mortals.

Thank you, Eric.

I shall soon return to my regular and unimpeded abuse of thar intarnets.

But first, a caution from one human being to another:
Be careful what you download, friends.  Sometimes, horse porn just isn't worth the risk.

So... I was out of commission for a month... Now I have like 3k messages. Awesome. -_-;

Maybe deviantART hasn't done what it's done for you as it has for me, but I come on here just about everyday unless something's preventing me from getting to my computer.  The community here is filled with enjoyable people from every corner of the world and they're all willing to critique and help and be just plain courteous.  I am inspired as much from clicking random deviants as I am from my watches, the front page, and daily deviations.  deviantART is truly one of the greatest web communities alive!

Happy Birthday deviantART!
