another inked page... as with My Faith in Frankie, trying out some scenes in a more comic-strip style, sometimes to play up the comedic elements in a scene, others to maybe act as counterpoint to the text... plus i guess its one of those things you can do in comics that's maybe harder to do in other mediums, and i guess if you don't try and push the formal elements (whatever the results) maybe there's less justification in doing an adaptation at all ? :p

Oh man, this is hilarious -- the first few frames are of Fanny Dashwood inspecting her newly-acquired goods, then it cuts to Marianne bidding woeful farewells to "dear Norland" and all the trees, true to her Romanticism-inspired attitudes...am I correct? :giggle:

Lovely interpretation!

very close! the initial frames show fanny's unhappiness with the dashwoods for actually taking some of the household things with them to barton :p

Aha! Well, kudos on managing to draw a non-movie version of the characters and get their identities across without any question as to who they are supposed to be. ;)

Do you know what each individual frame is going to say text-wise, or does that process follow your lead? (I.e., are you drawing from a script, or will a script be made from your drawings?)

hmm a bit of both i guess: i get the script from nancy and do the layouts, suggesting where dialogue/text might be added or removed for better flow, and nancy edits the script to get final version :)

I enjoy the look of this adaptation, but I am curious, are you rendering Jane Austen mute?

Would I wrong to say that the reason why we have chosen to remember Jane Austen is for her elegant, and lengthy prose?

heya heh no these are just the inks, they've got a letterer who'll add the balloons and text afterwards! :) pantomine austen would be... interesting though :p

But that would the the scripter, Ms. Nancy Butler's, job.

No easy job, that's for sure.

I'm so glad the comic-strip elements are going to be in the art as well. They look fantastic, and very funny.

I'm intrigued that this is already page 19 - I would have guessed it to be much earlier. Guess there will have to be a lot of backstory or something.

hmm yeah i think figuring out what parts to compress and what parts to play out must be one of the toughest things for nancy the writer... whats your fave tv/movie adapt?

The recent BBC adaptations of Sense and Sensibility and Emma, as well as the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice are my favorites (though I also have a secret soft spot for the 2005 version). I tend to enjoy most of the adaptations after 1995 (the 1980s BBC television series are wretched, in my opinion), except for Mansfield Park (I hold out hope that Marvel keeps adapting the Austen novels and Mansfield Park finally gets its first good visual adaptation, since the films are so ridiculously bad).

just got a chance to read issue one and turned out pretty good i think, cept for some word balloon placement and color issues :p i watched a few adaptations of SnS for visual references, and i think the emma thompson one is my fave, though i know it makes departures from the book. always interesting to see the castings though - esp the subtle differences that emerge with different actors in the roles :)
