HG 1/144 RX-78[G]E Gundam EX

This is the High Grade 1/144 RX-78[G]E Gundam EX. :) This mobile suit comes to us from Mobile Suit Gundam Requiem For Vengeance. T he Gundam EX is a state-of-the-art ground-use mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces. It is designed with an emphasis on maneuverability and operating time on the ground for force reconnaissance and rear disturbance deep into enemy territory. Many details of the unit are unknown because all development materials were destroyed in the post-war chaos.

This is perhaps one of the most unique takes on a Gundam that I’ve seen in a while. It has a very cool industrial prototype look to it. While I do like the design, and I loved the Gundam EX in Requiem For Vengeance, I have mixed feelings about this model kit. It does feature all of the cool gimmicks we see in the series, including that shoulder mounted gatling gun and the deployable beam sabers. You get three different sets of stickers for the eyes to let you choose which look you want to go with. The color separation on this is kit left a bit to be desired. While most of the color separation is pretty good, there are a lot of parts on this kit that need paint, which really surprised me for a modern High Grade kit.

As far as problems go, this is mostly a pretty solid kit, and I did have trouble finding things to critique about it. First, the rotation at the waist is very limited because of how the lower body is designed, which makes certain action poses difficult to achieve. My biggest problem with this kit was the color separation. I’ve seen Bandai do much better color separation on modern High Grade kits, and it feels like they kind of cut corners on this one.

All in all, this is a pretty solid kit with excellent articulation and attention to detail. This is definitely one of those designs that people are either going to love or hate. If you do like it, though, I absolutely do recommend picking it up, because it is a really good looking kit. 🙂
