HG 1/144 Geara Doga

This is the High Grade 1/144 Geara Doga. 🙂 This mobile suit comes to us from the film “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack”. The Geara Doga is a general purpose mobile suit with technology and design features descended from the old Zaku II. It is developed based upon the design of an Axis machine taken out by members of Neo Zeon following the group’s defeat at the end of the First Neo Zeon War. Since the resources of Char’s Neo Zeon are limited, the Geara Doga was not a particularly high-performing unit when compared to the machines used by Haman Karn’s Neo Zeon four years earlier; however, it was well in line with the style of mobile suit design of the day. Its performance was also sufficient for most soldiers, easy to mass-produce and remains a threat for the Earth Federation’s own mass-produced suit, the Jegan.

I’ve been wanted a regular Geara Doga for my collection for a while, so I finally decided to pick one up from the folks at ToyArena. Despite being a 2008 kit, this kit is surprisingly solid. I actually had a lot of fun detailing and building this kit. Like most older kits, there are definitely spots that need paint, but not a ton on this one. The articulation is mostly what you’d expect from an older High Grade kit, except that there’s a surprising range of motion in the head and neck.

I thought that I would find more issues with this kit, but as I said before, this thing is surprisingly solid for a 2008 kit. I was only able to find two issues with this kit. First, the top part of the head sometimes comes loose when you the head downward, but this can easily be fixed by gluing the top part of the head in place. The other issue is much minor, and that’s that the shield has an annoying temporary to get in the way while you’re posing the kit.

All in all, I really enjoyed working on this kit, and I definitely think that it’s worth picking up. The build is fun and easy, making it a good choice for builders of all skill levels. Most places sell this kit fairly inexpensively, so it’s a good choice for builders on a budget. If you’re a fan of the Neo Zeon mobile suits, or you’re simply looking for a fun kit to build, I recommend picking this one up. 😄
