#635: Hydreigon by Somnusvorus #635: Hydreigon by Somnusvorus
Probably my current favourite Pokemon right now, because it's a monster that pretty much destroys and consumes everything, also I love the old Japanese monster films and Hydreigon is based off King Ghidora. It is also based off Yamata no Orochi (8 headed snake demon), Didn't take too long, but I didn't know what to do for a background so I just threw one up and hoped for the best.

I won't be drawing anymore Pokemon stuff for awhile as I want to work on other things.

Comments greatly appreciated. :la:

EDIT: I have changed a few things and used the guidelines from the critique that I have been given. Hopefully, this is a better version. The older version is in my scraps if you still prefer that. =>

How refreshing it is to see some Pokémon artwork that goes beyond the simple comics and outdated poses. It's equally refreshing to see the newer generations share the spotlight!

The line work is nothing short of excellent. The tail, wings, and limbs flow together very well and give it a truly authentic dragon-like presence. It stays true to the cartoon style of Pokémon with just enough added depth and detail to keep it interesting and notable. The saliva dripping off of each mouth is an especially nice touch.

Just as the original colors blend well together, these slightly altered shades also pleasantly contrast. The bright magenta eye adds the right amount of intensity to the Hydreigon's demeanor.

The shading is decent, but could use some more strength, especially around the collar area. The "mane" around it's head could also use some shading adjustments, but such a detail is minute and doesn't distract from the piece as a whole.

The white outline works well against the circular backdrop, but the backdrop seems to contrast a bit much with Hydreigon. The colors on Hydreigon are much smoother, while the pink and purple of the backdrop is very bright and pulls attention away from the subject.

All-in-all, and exceptional piece of fan art. A great showcase of digital drawing skill! :)

This picture of the pokemon Hydregion was a very good attempt at giving it an astounding and strong appearance, as evident by the background, meant to compliment the pokemon; the outline, meant to define its shape and features; and its pose, which is dynamic and with movement.

It is made obvious that the source of light is coming from above by the location of shade and highlights. Even the frills encircling the head can be shown as in a forward position by the shading at the base and the underside of the frills.

However, the artist still has a few things to know, and these include color agreement, background/foreground agreement, common anatomical flaws, and the effect of different outlines on the artwork.

The color agreement was one of my first and foremost concerns when viewing this piece, namely when it came to the hydregion itself and the background. The splatter patterns on the background are in good intent, but the deep blue splatter does not suit the color scheme of the pokemon. To better fit the hydregion color, try using a cyan color similar to that of the pokemon's skin tone. (It can be made slightly bolder for the background to match the neon purple in the top left of the circle.) This would provide the right color agreement.

The other concern was the shade of the outline, which is white. Of course, everything else in the picture, including the hydregion and the background, are in dark tones. Therefore, the white outline is contradicting and distracting. I would highly recommend turning this white outline to black and keeping the thickness. The hydregion will be complimented in shape and color, and the picture overall will have a much more uniform look.

Another line recommendation would to make the lines on the hydregion, such as those defining the facial features and the limbs, only slightly thicker to match the thickness of the outline surrounding it. It would be better this way than leaving the hydregion with a very thick outline and extremely thin defining lines.

Lastly, there is a slight anatomical error on the tail; the reddish-purple underside's curvature doesn't match that of the tail. Redoing the underside to add more curvature would easily fix this problem.

Again, it was a great try, and practice makes perfect. I enjoyed critiquing this artwork, as I am a pokemon fan myself. Keep at it.

It's the tail. Just the way the shadow falls on it, but it's old so I have no intentions of correcting it. :giggle:

Hydreigon can learn 17 types of moves, so it can counter Fairy types rather easily, if you're careful. :p

Thanks for the comment though.

My original one was a bit different from this, but I had taken advice from one of the critiques I received and this colour scheme works better. :)

I always loved dark types and Hydreigon holds a special place for being BOTH dark and dragon as well as reminding me of King Ghidorah and a bit of Geno Hydra. Then having one on the team for the first time oh man! You did amazing job here doing Hydreigon justice!
