10/17 Update:

I am so sorry for the late responses to comments and entries! I have been dealing with a flare up of my chronic illness for the last couple weeks and I've been running very low on energy. In order to ensure everyone gets the proper prizes and the judging is done in a timely manner, I will be extending the deadline to 11/15. Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone! :) Welcome to the official Solace Stables Grand Opening Show! This is the first event to be hosted at Solace Stables, so we hope you enjoy our facilities. This show was inspired by my love for fall, Halloween, and all of the wonderful, nostalgic memories I have of horseback riding in September-November.

I also hope that this show will help you develop your horses and riders and encourage collaboration and support between artists. This year has been rough for me personally and considering the pandemic and political state of the world, I'm sure I'm not the only one! Lets practice some self care by having fun with our pixel ponies.

Setting

  • Well behaved dogs and barn pets are welcome to join your horses and riders at Solace Stables!

  • Please note that due to the show taking place in the fall, the cherry blossom trees will have yellow leaves instead of pink! The pine trees however, will not change color.

  • Katie can be found walking around the property making friends with all of the people attending the show. She will make sure that everyone is settled in safely and is willing to help wherever it is needed. Anna will be available for any coaching or training needs. Raleigh is focusing on gaining riding and show experience (she will participate for fun, but will not be eligible to place).

  • Stalls and turnout services will be provided.

  • The indoor arena (which can be seen here and here) will be open for schooling. A couple show jumps will be set up in addition to a brush jump for cross country. The jumps will be removed prior to the warm up time for reining and dressage classes.

Rules/FAQ

  • All horse breeds (realistic and fantasy) are allowed.

  • All riders must be at least 16 years old (exception: fun class).

  • All horses must be at least 5 years old (exception: fun class).

  • Riders may enter as many classes as they like.

  • Horses may only enter each class once; however, riders may enter multiple times using different horses.

  • To maintain an element of realism; if your horse is entered in eventing, they may not enter the Grand Prix show jumping, reining, or the individual dressage classes.

  • Depicting horse misbehavior, refusals, rails down, spooking, etc will not impact your placing. Only showing your horse and/or rider falling will penalize you.

  • See each individual class description for tack and apparel requirements.

  • No pre-registration is required.**

  • Tracing/grid referencing/etc. is allowed! Please make sure you credit your references.

  • No re-using old artwork or lineart.

  • No pre-made lineart or backgrounds allowed. Art should be created for this show.

  • All entries must include a full-body image of your rider and horse (exceptions made if an obstacle is blocking the visibility of part of your horse).

  • Q: Can I enter someone else's horse? A: Absolutely! We would love for you to use the clinic as a way to finish any artwork you may need to do for art trades, breeding slot payments, etc. If you'd like to draw a group horse from a fictional breed, that's great too!

  • Q: Can my HARPG barn/stable/farm/group sponsor the show by donating a prize? A: Of course! Send me a note or comment below. We would love to work with you. Please note that there are no point/judging bonuses for donating a prize.

  • ** Pre-registration is not required; however, I am planning on drawing art for the show that will include competitors horses and riders (and the opportunity for role-play or art collaboration). If you want your characters to be included, please pre-register below with your horse's name and reference, rider's name (and reference if they have one, a description of them will work if they do not), and the class(es) they are entering.

Schedule:

Friday, Day One:

Weather: Brisk, 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning. It is overcast and cloudy, with a few periods of time where a light amount of rain falls. The sky is dark and dreary for the morning classes but thankfully most of the rainstorm blows away from the stables. The sun comes out during the lunch break, raising the temperature to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. By 6pm the sun has started to set, leaving a beautiful orange and red hue throughout the sky. The sky is mostly dark for the grand prix show jumping, and the arena is lit up by street lights that have been rented and placed around the arena.

9am-11am - Three Day Eventing Dressage

  • Located in the outdoor dressage arena (the dirt arena to the right of the grass arena with jumps in it). Please note that the letters are on planters that are currently filled with fall decor.

  • Horses should be shown in a Dressage saddle and bridle (double-bits are not required) with a white saddle pad, (optional) half pad, and (optional) boots or polo wraps. Manes and tails do not need to be braided but they should be kept neat. Riders should be wearing a helmet or top hat (with longer hair kept in a hairnet), tall boots, (optional) spurs, white breeches, and a Shadbelly coat.

  • You are free to show your horse and rider completing any of the following movements: collected walk, medium walk, extended walk, collected trot, working trot, extended trot, collected canter, working canter, extended canter, lead changes, shoulder-in, turn on the haunches, half pass, halt, and salute.

11am-12pm - Novice Dressage

  • Located in the outdoor dressage arena (the dirt arena to the right of the grass arena with jumps in it). Please note that the letters are on planters that are currently filled with red roses.

  • You are free to show your horse and rider completing any of the following movements: collected walk, medium walk, extended walk, collected trot, working trot, extended trot, collected canter, working canter, extended canter, lead changes, shoulder-in, turn on the haunches, halt, and salute.

12pm-2pm - Lunch Break

  • Catering can be found in the viewing room attached to the indoor arena.

  • Today's menu: Water, various sodas, coffee and tea are available to drink. Italian pasta salad (vegetarian), grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, bread and butter, and cinnamon sweet potato smoothies are available to eat.

2-4pm - Dressage - Musical Freestyle Grand Prix

  • Located in the outdoor dressage arena (the dirt arena to the right of the grass arena with jumps in it). Please note that the letters are on planters that are currently filled with fall decorations (feel free to customize this as you like, be creative and have fun)!

  • Weather: The sun is at it's maximum height for the day; causing the lighting to be bright and warm, allowing the horses to show off their coats. Unfortunately, that means that the weather has heated up again as well with a toasty high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • No formal attire is needed for this class. Have fun and be creative! Horses can be shown in any tack you see fit as this is a freestyle and we are encouraging costumes!

  • You are free to show your horse and rider completing any dressage movement that you see fit!

  • Include a link to the song or musical composition in the description of your entry.

6-8pm - Showing Jumping - Grand Prix

  • Located in the outdoor grass arena (to the left of the Dressage arena).

  • No formal attire is needed for this class. Have fun and be creative! Horses should be shown in an English saddle and bridle with boots or polo wraps; riders should wear a helmet, polo top, breeches (any color is allowed), and their choice of tall boots. Spurs and crops are optional.

  • The class is ran in a grand prix format; with everyone completing the first round of jumping, and then all clear rounds complete a timed jump-off.

  • You can use one of the 5 jump designs shown here or create your own fall-themed jump!

Saturday, Day Two:

Weather: The sun has almost finished rising by 9am. The footing and grass around the arena is wet with dew as it rained more over the night. A few, small puddles can be seen in the arenas. It is chilly outside and there's no denying that it is fall. The sun shines bright for most of the day; the smell of barbecue and fresh apple cider permeates through the air. The temperature varies between 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit.

9am-12pm - Three Day Eventing Cross Country

  • Located on our cross country course and part of a roped off area that goes through the nearby forests.

  • Horses should be shown with an English saddle, bridle, saddle pad, (optional) half pad, and protective boots. Breastplates are recommended. Riders should wear a helmet, protective vest, gloves, breeches, tall boots, a watch to keep track of their time, and (optional) spurs and a crop. All riders are required to wear a medical wristband that states any allergies, any preexisting medical conditions that could impact their care in an emergency scenario, and lists their emergency contact.

  • Fences range between 3'6"-4'0" in height and consist of any obstacle you would find through a CCI*** start competition. Feel free to be creative and have fun!

12pm-2pm - Lunch Break

  • Catering can be found in the viewing room attached to the indoor arena.

  • Today's menu: Water, various sodas, coffee and tea are available to drink. Grilled hot dogs (toppings; Chicago-style, ketchup, mustard, relish, and various veggies available), walking tacos (vegan and vegetarian options are available), corn dogs, fried pickles, and a build your own salad bar.

2-3pm - Show Jumping - Speed Class

  • Located in the outdoor dirt arena (to the right of the Dressage arena).

  • No formal attire is needed for this class. Have fun and be creative! Horses should be shown in an English saddle and bridle with (optional) boots or polo wraps; riders should wear a helmet, polo top, breeches (any color is allowed), and their choice of boots or chaps. Spurs and crops are optional.

  • The jumps for this class are set at heights between 3'6"-4'0". This class is based entirely on speed; each rail done will add 5 seconds to your time, and the fastest horse and rider will win.

  • You can use one of the 5 jump designs shown here or create your own fall-themed jump!

6-8pm - Freestyle Reining

  • Located in the outdoor dirt arena (to the right of the Dressage arena).

  • No formal attire is needed for this class. Have fun and be creative! Horses can be shown in any tack you see fit as this is a freestyle and we are encouraging costumes!

  • You are free to show your horse and rider completing any movement that you see fit, as long as it still suits reining.

  • Include a link to the song or musical composition in the description of your entry.

Sunday, Day Three:

The puddles have dried up from day two, leaving the footing around the stables and in the arenas firm yet soft. It's chilly in the morning (55 degrees Fahrenheit) so your riders may want to wear a sweatshirt or hoodie as they take their warm up rides. Thankfully the sun is out all day and the temperature rises to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

9-11am - Three Day Eventing Show Jumping

  • Located in the outdoor dirt arena (to the right of the Dressage arena).

  • Horses should be shown in an English saddle and bridle with boots or polo wraps; riders should wear a show coat, white or tan breeches, and their choice of tall boots. Spurs and crops are optional.

  • The jumps for this class are set at heights between 3'6"-4'0".

  • You can use one of the 5 jump designs shown here or create your own fall-themed jump!

12pm-2pm - Lunch Break

  • Catering can be found in the viewing room attached to the indoor arena.

  • Today's menu: Water, various sodas, coffee and tea are available to drink. Bloody Mary's are available for anyone over 21 years old. Barbecue brisket sandwiches, Nashville hot chicken sandwiches (vegetarian "chicken" available as well), coleslaw, potato salad, and ice cream sandwiches.

2-3pm - Fun Class

  • This is entirely up to you and your imagination! The location can be anywhere on Solace Stables' property or in the surrounding forest area.

  • Suggestions: Costume class, Gambler's choice jumping, ride-a-buck, egg/spoon race, musical stalls, lead line or cross rail jumping (perhaps one of your youngest riders wants a turn in the arena?), etc.

  • Your horse and rider can use whatever tack and attire you see fit.

  • While this is not an effort-based class, your entries still need to be full body with a background (no pre-made backgrounds or photo backgrounds allowed).

  • This class is judged using a random number generator to select a "score" out of 50. The highest score wins.

  • You can enter this class up to 3 times per horse/rider combination! Each additional entry will add 5 points to your score (for a total possible bonus of 10 points).

4pm-end: Those who would like to spend more time at Solace Stables are invited to join us on a relaxing trail ride through the forest to the nearby St. Lawrence river. Food will be provided upon returning to Solace Stables; which will include barbecue (ribs, turkey, and chicken), homestyle mac anad cheese, collared greens, mashed potatoes, apple cider (alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available) , and plenty of refreshing drinks. If you have dogs, you are welcome to bring them as well!

Judging:

/30 - Effort and creativity compared to your own gallery. Did you try something new with your entry piece? Perhaps a new medium, tricky pose, detailed shading, or time spent perfecting your background and lighting? Feel free to write what you worked on in the description of your entry so that we can appreciate your hard work. :)

/15 - Accuracy to the class rules and setting. Did you draw/paint the correct time of day, season (fall), use the appropriate tack, and rider apparel? For the show jumping and cross country; did you include a themed jump somewhere in your entry?

/15 - Story. I would love to learn more about your horses and riders! Grammar and spelling will not be held against you as I want the focus to be on creativity and enjoying your art. Your story should be a minimum of 250 words (no maximum length). Your story will be judged on the flow and amount of effort compared to other stories in your gallery.

/5 - RNG. This is not intended to drastically change the placing, but to help in the case of a tie and to add an element of realism to the show.

= /65 points

Optional bonuses:

+5 points - Draw your horse and/or rider at any time that they are not competing. Did they take a warm up ride? Maybe your rider spent some time grooming their horse or braiding manes before their class? Or perhaps they made a new friend during their lunch break? Did they participate in the trail ride? This image should be full body with a basic background to receive the full 5 point bonus.

*Maximum of a 5 point bonus per class. You're more than welcome to draw additional pieces, but only one will give you the bonus.

+2 points - Make a post with a link to the show journal in order to advertise and spread the word about the show. Please include a link to your post in the description of your entry.

+1 point each (maximum of 5 points added) - Leave a supportive, nice comment on the another competitor's piece! Comments should be at least a sentence long. Please include links to your comments in the description of your entry.

Prizes

Everyone will receive a participation ribbon in additional to these prizes.

Artwork prizes for each class will be uploaded in a similar format to YHH drawings prior to the event being finished in order to provide incentive and to award prizes faster. (Backgrounds will be fully completed, the horse and rider will remain a sketch until winners are determined). Artwork prizes for the Champion and Reserve Champion awards will be customized to the winner's desires.
