Warning! This article includes some spoilers for FRUITS BASKET.

On Monday, November 12th, Hakusensha announced through their magazine Hana to Yume an upcoming anime adaptation of famous manga FRUITS BASKET. The cover photo for the 24th 2018 issue of Hana to Yume revealed the new series. Hakusensha has revealed little other information, but the magazine ships on November 20th.

FRUITS BASKET originally printed in Hana to Yume from 1998 to 2006. The story follows orphan Tohru Honda, who accidentally camps out on the private land of the mysterious Sohma family. The family offers to take her in, which brings Tohru to learn the secret of the clan: their members are possessed by animals from the Chinese Zodiac. Tohru continues to live with them, finding herself directly in the middle of their family affairs. However, there is even more to the Sohma family than Tohru can ever expect.

This classic shojo is one of the best-selling manga of all time. What does this new anime mean for the FRUITS BASKET characters we love?

This isn’t FRUITS BASKET’s first anime run. In 2001, Studio Deen released a 26-episode, one-season FRUITS BASKET anime. But there were some major differences between the anime and its original manga. At the time that the anime launched, the manga was still underway. Tokyopop hadn’t even translated the series into English yet. So the anime took some liberties that wound up diverging from the manga. Some of the most notable changes include giving Akito a terminal illness that didn’t exist in the manga, the absence of Rin and Kureno Sohma, and not being able to include Akito’s gender reveal.

The anime’s divergence brings to mind a phrase printed alongside the new anime announcement: “zenpen” or “the entire story.” While no information has been revealed about the upcoming adaptation, this phrase hints towards its content. After the huge changes in the 2001 anime, could this be the chance to see a version of FRUITS BASKET more closely aligned with the original manga? Following the success of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD, an adaptation of another widely popular series whose anime diverged from the manga, this seems possible. Still, the FRUITS BASKET anime could create something new. It could finish the story that the 2001 anime started. Or even pick up at the series’ spin-off: FRUITS BASKET ANOTHER instead.

In any case, the anime will hopefully follow in the success of its predecessors. The original manga sold over 18 million copies in Japan and won the 2001 shojo Kodansha Manga Award. Critics praised the series for its intellectual story, pleasing art, and dramatic themes. Even the anime, with its major differences, gained a huge fan following. How can we not look forward to seeing more of the manga we all loved?

Looking for a refresher on FRUITS BASKET? There are a number of ways to get your fix. I recommend checking out the spin-off series, in case it’s related to the new anime. FRUITS BASKET ANOTHER offers new eyes into the FRUITS BASKET world. Original creator Natsuki Takaya launched the spin-off in 2015 on HanaLaLa online. The manga takes place after Tohru graduates and features a different girl just entering high school named Sawa. You can find the comic now on Hakusensha’s Manga Park website and app. It’s set to end after the next chapter, stopping after three volumes’ worth of content. Still, we don’t know when that will be, as the manga updates irregularly.

If you’re old like me, you might remember Tokyopop releasing the original manga series in English back in 2004. Whereas now, you can find FRUITS BASKET through Yen Press. Starting in 2016, they began re-releasing FRUITS BASKET in 12 omnibus volumes. As for the original anime, you can find the complete series up on Funimation and Hulu.
