so I've been watching this guy called Dan Bell on YouTube. he does these "tour" things through dead and dying malls and department stores and takes a lot of videos and pictures of them through the days as they slowly become completely empty and barren

see, I'm really interested in it, but for some reason, I feel so fucking awful when I'm watching them. and you know what? it is the same exact feeling I get as when I hear vaporwave. I never knew anything else would make me feel that way, but watching these videos by Dan Bell about dead department stores is making me feel this way. I still can't really describe it, but... depressed is a good word. it's different though. not a good different at all. and I think it's safe to say that since both these videos (with decrepit stores from my childhood) and vaporwave (music from the 80s & 90s) has something to do with nostalgia. I couldn't tell you what exactly but I know I shouldn't do it anymore because it triggers a very, very bad feeling in me.

check out Dan Bell if you're curious. it shouldn't have the same effect on everyone since not everyone I know feels suicidal and awful when they listen to vaporwave lol. in fact, I've only heard of one or two other people feeling bad, and not to the same extent as me. but they're really interesting if you don't get that feeling. a recent one I watched lately had to do with a K-mart. I'm just curious as to how the two are related in a way that they both make me feel in a very similar, bad way.

when you said dead department stores and malls i thought "hmm, wonder if he did my mall", i searched it... he did.
maybe the vaporwave beats or tones or w/e hit a certain spot in your brain that trigger it? O:

I believe he may live in pennsylvania so?? I'm not sure tho :0 what one was your mall?
and I'm pretty sure that's what it is! I think it might be a mix of a couple things, but the tones definitely do not sit right with me. because Dan Bell uses the same kind of music that's typically in vaporwave, so there has to be some connection between the sounds...

it does really suck bc I love his stuff too!! I have tried looking into what's causing it, but I haven't gotten any clear answers bc it seems like nobody else feels the same way. I looked pretty deeply into vaporwave when I realized it made me feel bad, as did my friend, and I didn't get any satisfying answers :^( my current theory is it's a mixture of nostalgia and tone, like you suggested. the perfect concoction of a horrible feeling for me
but... I still don't know how??? I guess I may never know :'//

BUT
the tone thing has very good evidence, because I also have problems when the phone rings. I've always unplugged the older telephones because if I'm at home alone and it rings, I have bad anxiety. it's not anxiety about answering the phone, it's literally anxiety about the ringing of the phone
so perhaps I have... something with sound, as you said??

sound can be surpassingly effective at dictating mood and emotions so i'd say that's a big factor in this :0 and idk if you believe in reincarnation or anything like that but maaaybe,, it could have something to do with a past life?? i'm just spitballing here but i think this is really interesting :0

I have to agree with you, I think you're right! in most of the videos I've seen by him so far (which admittedly isn't a lot), he's used specific songs that were similar to the ones I've heard used in vaporwave as well. so I think we're onto something here with the tonal bit for sure

and I do believe in reincarnation, which I have also considered!! I have no idea what my past life/lives were, if I even had any, but... that's another factor I've actually considered. there's just so much idk about how I react to this, I'd really like to figure it out ;;

sound is crazy man. maybe you could try researching like "sound/tones dictating mood" or the effects of certain sounds on the brain??

maybe in a more recent past life you died traumatically/had a traumatic experience sometime in the 80s/90s listening to music?? same thing with the phone ringing, except maybe that was another life?? you could also always try asking a doctor or therapist if you have access to that :0
