White-Topped Pitcher Plant

This piece began with a detailed sketch which was cleaned up and transferred to watercolor paper. I built the painting in layers, starting with a thin wash of E-Sumi Boku Undo shadow yellow as the foundation, followed by shadow green and dropping in brownish black to establish the darks early.

From there I worked the push and pull of warm and cool - W&N viridian green for the cool tones, a hand-mixed warm yellow green to balance, and shadow red to deepen the richness of the foliage. Once the watercolor layers were dry and I was satisfied with the tonal range, I moved into the detail work - adding the fine veining and linework with a white Sakura Gelly Roll pen and colored pencil to bring the texture of the pitchers to life.
