I usually try to have walls around my topside entrance, with an elevated fortification ring for archers.

I just wanna have a pond for fishing, some space for above-ground farm plots, some bushed for harvesting, maybe a little outdoor butchery, and a topside trade depot so I can keep my fort mostly secure from land-based threats.

It is truly incredible how brutal the developer managed to make a game that is entirely ASCII in graphics. I'm not sure I'd even want to see Dwarf Fortress with improved graphics.
