Zoe opened her eyes. She just laid there on her mattress calming her breath and listening to the silence. She silently turned over and got up , noticing that it was still dark outside when she glanced out the window. She wouldn't be able to sleep again for a while. These nightmares had been there for years, she didn't have them as often as when she was a kid but still too often for her liking. She didn't need to remember what happened and just wanted to put it all behind her.
She looked around her room; at the mattress on the floor that was her bed, the empty walls with peeling wallpaper, and then the window that shouldn't be opened, because she would most likely never be able to shut it again. If she even managed to open it at all in the first place.
