Dreaming of Elven Things

Samwise Gamgee daydreaming in the Baggins' garden. 'Thought I'd take a break from the scary battle scenes to try to focus on something tamer. Tolkien's legendarium frequently pauses in the midst of all the excitement to examine the joys of the common life, to enjoy natural beauty in the world around us and wonder at what lies beyond. I imagine Sam is looking across Bagshot Row beyond the water towards the lands where only elves now dwell.

Done in pen and ink.

Lovely work, lineart on brown paper and the white looks really good. It's good to see hobbits doing what they love

Very Lovely, though I'm surprised that any Hobbit can look so sleek! (though given Master Gamgee is a gardener he may well be a little less comfortable in the stomach reason than the like of Merry & Pippin).:) (Smile)

Much appreciated sir. Yes, that was the idea, that Sam is usually at work. As great a performance as Sean Astin gave, I still have a hard time picturing Sam as rotund. He just doesn't seem subdued enough. Sure he's unassuming and a bit quiet at times, but his dedication and persistence give me the impression that he'd be a tad thinner than his fellow halflings.  I also think that he would be the youngest of the four hobbits. Nothing from the text really indicates this other than the fact that he seems more eager than his comrades and he mentions his old gaffer frequently. Just a thought.

I am very happy to agree with that idea, though one would suggest that Merry & Pippin (happy-go-lucky rascals that they be) would seem rather younger - or at least more youthful - than Sam, as one would expect of rogues still pinching vegetables from the local tenantry!

I can definitely see Pippin  as the younger of the two, but Merry seems a little more mature. Especially in the first couple chapters when he is first introduced in the book. Perhaps not as grown-up as he would like to appear, but certainly a capable fellow in his own borders of Buckland.

This scene makes me so happy. I wish Jackson hadn't skipped over the joys and horrors of Hobbiton in his films.

Oh good, my work is done then.
Yes, it's a pity. I understand why it wasn't included given the restraints of film, but I do wish we could have seen a little more of the Shire.

Understandable, but I share the sentiment. I hope Sam gets his contemplation time in.
