I'm surprised I've never thought about it. But I'd love to see an HD remake of SMB, SMB2, SMB3, and maybe even SMW. I think the games are small enough that an HD compilation of the four would make for a good normal priced Switch game. I can't see any type of 2D Mario game getting much spotlight after all the NSMB games and then Super Mario Maker and the upcoming Mario Odyssey, but I feel like a really well remastered compilation of the games would be great.

I think it'd be really interesting if Nintendo were to remake the original games, but do it in a much more cinematic way. As much as I love all four titles, I think it'd be much more interesting if they did a retelling of the games, with more backstory and player involvement. I doesn't have to be on the level of something like Sonic 06, but just something to spice up the concept a bit more. Honestly, the 2D Mario games need somewhat of an overhaul in general. The New Super Mario Bros. series worked for a while, but quickly became stale. 3D Land and World also were interesting, but the experience felt a little...empty (moreso with 3D World). Retelling the tale of the first four Mario games, plus introducing newer mechanics - I think that'd make for a pretty awesome game.

Now that's something I can get behind! And even with new mechanics, the levels' structures would not need to change a whole lot, so seeing a story approach would be really cool. I have always wanted to see a better story in the games. I know you can say that Mario games are more about the gameplay and the story just drives the gameplay, but if the gameplay is still great, why not have some interesting story alongside it.

You're pretty right that they've needed an overhaul. I mean honestly, I don't see them releasing another 2D game for a while and when they do it'll need something big to make it more interesting. You're right that the games are just getting pretty stale. And with Super Mario Maker, they let you make the games basically, so they need to outdo that.

Even if it's just as simple as bringing more of the instruction manual backstory to light in the games (where Bowser kidnaps Peach for her magic, and curses Toad's into blocks) - I'm down for that. The most involved a Mario plot has ever gotten is Paper Mario: TTYD and Super Paper Mario - both of which executed it greatly. So if they could bring something like that for a mainline Mario game, I'd be more than happy.

Exactly, we need something that molds the genre a bit more than just left-to-right platforming action. As for what they could do, I have no idea - but Mario Maker basically takes care of our 2D Mario needs for the next decade or so.

I would really enjoy that! I don't see why they couldn't mold a story into the game and put some short cutscenes throughout the game, maybe once per world, to tell the story, in addition to some other methods. They really could take a page out of Paper Mario's book (pun intended), and have a better story like those games.

They have the models of the Koopalings to make a SMB3 or SMW HD remake, but I would LOVE some sort of SMB2 reboot. I LOVED that game as a kid!

It is a great game. I would love to see some successor or remake of it

I know it was established as a dream in the end, but people can dream of the same things more than once, sometimes just with different outcomes or small things changed around.

Of course! I mean if it was a remake, it could take the place of that game entirely in a "Mario Timeline."
