Gokusen: Yankumi 2

In honour of today being the International Women’s Day, I present you with one of the most kickass fictional women I know of - Yankumi.

Bareknuckle-brawler, righter of wrongs, clumsy and socially awkward best friend, teacher and avenging hero, yakuza princess and all-around dork. Yankumi is the best.

I think what I like best about Gokusen is the way Yankumi subverts tropes like nobody’s business - they even try to pull the “but you’re a girl“-schtik on her early in the manga, and she just laughs at the whole idea and goes crashing through a window to save her friend from a molester. Because she can.

…. What I’m saying is that someone desperately needs to release the Gokusen-manga in English so that I can throw my money at them. Can we make this happen, please?

And yes, I've drawn her before

Does she really end up falling in love with one of her male students?

She does, yes. However, they don't have a relationship while he is her student, and she spends most of the manga in love with her family's lawyer, and thinks of the student merely as a very dependable friend.

So you're saying the relationship is more platonic?

Yes. The male student - Shin - certainly wishes it wasn't, but even HE spends a lot of time not knowing that he likes her, and IIRC, they only kiss, like, *once*, and I think that's either in the very last chapter (the same day he graduates) or in the extras (which takes place when he's in college, and she's no longer his teacher).

The story places a lot more emphasis on friendship and dorky humour and standing up for outcasts and *being* an outcast, etc. The romantic subplot isn't super-important.
