The golden ratio

It's amazing how a single number (literally 1) with a long, seemingly random fraction behind it, could ever have as much real world significance as the Golden ratio. It puts even Pi to shame, despite the latter being a bit less esoteric, while still a crucial mathematical figure in its own right.

the golden ratio is no single number. only the proportion, the thing between the two (or three and more) ratings  tells the story.

it's got some extra cool properties phi^2 = phi + 1 and 1 / phi = phi - 1
