“Birdnesting” is the adorable name for the horrible phenomenon when your sewing loops and bunches on the fabric, creating – you'll know it when you see it. Or maybe the thread's got caught in the bobbin case, or tangled around itself. Perhaps the thread jumps out of the needle, or the machine sucks the fabric into the gears.
I created this guide for myself after an afternoon of research. If you google for answers, there are a lot of them out there. But sewing machines are finicky beasts, and it's hard to work out which to try.
Especially for new sewers: these articles often jump straight to serious problems like bobbin case tension (?!!?), when your problem is most likely being inexperienced at pinning, forgetting how to thread properly, or leaving the presser foot up.
