"They're late" John muttered to Madeline, trying to deflect the discomfort of their half-hour wait in this old freezing church. He hated dragging her into this but the job was the job. The silence between them stretched thin, the kind that made you second-guess every decision.

* BLAM *

A gunshot ripped through the sanctuary... its sharp crack amplified by the stone walls making the source impossible to pinpoint. John’s heart pounded as he pulled his gun and dropped into hiding along the nearest wall. "Stay hidden. We don’t know what we're up against" he whispered, the words barely audible over the ringing in his ears.

Madeline’s reply came with a wild gleam in her eyes. "Not a chance!" She held up a heavy metal candle holder like it was Excalibur and her, the lady of the lake ready for anything. "What the..." John started but her fierce determination cut him off. Her desire to be beside John no matter what comes their way is always both lovable and problematic at the same time.

But now's not the time to let those feelings creep in. Now is the time to get to the bottom of this mystery.
