Against All Odds PT 2

Having collected a few supplies from the ship, finding an exit from the water-worn caverns had given River time to assess her new partner's injuries.  Dain's wounds were mostly superficial, except for his broken right arm. She could see that throbbing from the medical computer's attempt to accelerate healing, and could sympathise that its soothing voice offered little comfort.

As night approached, her practicality kicked-in, "We need shelter." Survival, in this humid place, was now their sole concern. She scanned the horizon, then gestured toward the crumbling remnants of what might once have been a lone settler's home. "We might find cover in those abandoned struct-"

A metallic growl interrupted her words.

She turned to face the unexpected visitor - a dog-like robot with gleaming eyes, round edges and lots of artillery at its disposal.

River's blaster lay out of reach and with his makeshift, splintered arm, Dain wouldn't be much help to her.  She reached for the baseball bat that he had brought with him from Earth; fear forcing her to tighten her grip. However, when she spoke her voice remained steady. "What do you want?" **

The robot tilted its head, assessing them with an otherworldly curiosity.

NOTES:
I'm continuing the story for now and hope to keep enough steam going to finish this.  I'm also trying to go for the epic work of master Boris Vallejo.  If I capture even 5% of his magic then it's a win.
