New Years is always a very exciting time. There are of course the usual festivities so soon after the big holidays and all the nonsense and excitement that comes with them, but New Years perhaps is more festive and exciting than the preceding days of merriment for the simple fact that none of the attached solemnity comes along with it! Of course if you are a cat or a dog New Years can be quite terrifying, what with all the loud noises and endless explosions, it's enough to drive any sensible four-legged furry creature mad! Of course, if you are a two-legged furry creature, such as a kobold, New Years can be just as much fun for you as it is for humans.
Brush Ninja Kobold and Sailor Kobold stuck their heads underneath the tent fabric, squirming beneath it and into the interior. She looked around as her nautical associate righted his white cover and dusted off his crackerjacks. They were surrounded by boxes filled with fireworks. Big ones, small ones, bright ones, and dull ones. Noisemakers, cracklers, poppers, sparklers and any other kind of 'ers' you could imagine a firework being in possession of. Brush Ninja pointed towards a particularly box filled with said munitions, sending Sailor scampering forwards and up the box. Standing on the edge of the crate, he took a moment to steady himself on the lip and peered down at the selection before him before perching precariously on the edge and reaching in.
He pulled out a small fizzler and held it up triumphantly. “Grah?”
“Eh.” Brush Ninja said with a shake of her head.
Sailor frowned and tossed the fizzler aside, rummaging around for another.
He pulled out a good sized popper. “Grah?”
Brush Ninja considered for a moment before shaking her head.
Sailor gnashed his teeth and went back to his search, tossing the popper away and nearly hitting Brush Ninja in the head with it. She scowled at him and kicked the side of the box, jerking him from his perch and sending him tumbling into the box of fireworks. Once inside, Sailor Kobold righted his cap once more before scratching the lump on his head as he gazed around at his surroundings inquisitively.
His eyes fell upon a particularly big firework done up in red, yellow, and orange, his beady little eyes widening in excitement.
Outside the box, Brush Ninja listened as Sailor rummaged around inside, tapping her furry little foot impatiently. A moment later, a shower of fireworks spilled over the edge, burying her in a veritable avalanche of brightly colored explosives. She twitched in annoyance, coming out of the pile to glower up at the box. Sailor was standing there triumphantly, holding aloft the large firecracker he'd found.
“Grah?” he inquired excitedly.
Brush Ninja scowled but nodded her head in acceptance. “Geh.”
Sailor hopped from the box and with his newly found munition in tow, made his way back to the edge of the tent where they'd first scrambled through. He stuck his head under the fabric and squirmed through once more, clinging to the firecracker with his feet and tugging it behind him. However when it came the firework's turn to go under the fabric it proved too large. Brush Ninja rolled her little black eyes in exasperation as Sailor tried futilely to pull the firework out after him. She took out her brushes and made a quick incision in the tent, opening a large hole for the firework. Of course Sailor failed to realize this and kept pulling. This of course resulted in the rocket sailing out and flattening him. Brush Ninja came out of the tent and popped Sailor in the head as he lay squashed beneath the rocket.
After a moment to right themselves, the pair scampered off up the grassy hill overlooking the carnival grounds and began setting up their prize. Once that was done, Brush Ninja struck a spark upon the edge of one of her brushes. Touching it to the fuse of the rocket she scampered away to safe distance. Looking back, she realized that Sailor was standing right next to the rocket staring at it in expectant excitement!
“GAAAAH!” she exclaimed, scrambling back to grab the flap of his crackerjacks and drag him back.
His doltish smile solicited a scowl, but any further admonishing was forestalled by the rocket's ignition. Both Kobolds watched with sparkling eyes as it sailed upwards into the night sky to join the stars in brilliant explosions of colors, clapping with giddy excitement as a piece of the rocket went off in secondary explosions and sailed from the sky. Now unfortunately, that secondary explosion wasn't part of the firework. No, in fact it had been Steampunk Kobold flying around in his STARK suit. Now however he was plummeting in his STARK suit after having suffered a direct hit from the munition that Sailor and Brush Ninja had inadvertently launched at him! He struck the ground with a momentous crunch, skidding through the grass and digging up the dirt in a great furrow before finally coming to a stop.
He took a moment as his suit appraised the damage before confirming that it was superficial. Standing up, he turned menacingly towards Sailor and Brush Ninja Kobolds who had come to investigate the remnants of their 'rocket'. Upon seeing Steampunk coming at them angrily however, both yelped and made a break for it as he fired a discharge from his palm cannon. Scurrying back down the hill the pair bolted inside of the tent filled with firecrackers where they'd originally retrieved their munition. Steampunk glared and aimed both his palm cannons at the tent, not realizing what was inside of it!
Up on the hill, Drinking Buddy Kobold and Confused Kobold both sat down and raised kobold-sized mugs of beer up in cheers as Steampunk opened fire. His cannons had the expected effect as the fireworks within the tent ignited, sending dozens of rockets sailing into the sky as all the 'ers' previously mentioned hissed and popped angrily. The humans at the carnival were quite panicked but the kobolds were even more so! Steampunk Kobold was hit again by yet another rocket, this one carrying him up into the air where it and he both exploded, only to drop him back down in a smoking heap where Drinking Buddy poured a keg of beer over him in an attempt to cool the smoking wreckage as Steampunk groaned inside of his armor.
Meanwhile, the tent had fired off into the air, erupting in a brilliant explosion of color, leaving Sailor and Brush Ninja cowering beneath its light before they realized that aside from some singed fur, they were both quite alright. The pair of them sat there for a time, looking up at the bright fireworks display as it continued to burst and explode over their heads. It was quite an exciting new years eve for everyone.
I really enjoyed the New Years story and the drawings that went with it. I am always in awe of people that can write and/or draw as I have neither of those talents. Hope to see more.
There'll be more Kobolds running around if that's what you're asking for.
They're far too entertaining not to have funning (or is it running?) amok.
Happy New Years and congrats!!!
Hahaha! Thanks for the first smile of the year, love. Aside from some editing fixes here and there, that was well done. Perhaps if I get some time today I'll sketch the little guys.
