Manuary: Mask Sewn To Face
A story from the world of "Wahr"
(1141 words)
The massive circus tent sulked, the heavy canvas walls sagging inward like a tired old lung breathing out after a bad show. The painted pale crescent moons hanging from the ceiling had smeared with sweat and smoke, their smiles now running long and ugly down the bony ribcage of Pavlik’s Amazing Carnival. The last echoes of a thin applause, given by an uncertain audience still clung to the rafters like a cobwebbed veil.
Pavlik sat alone in the ring of half-dimmed light, his back turned to the now-empty seats, while his hands clawed desperately at his own skin. He could feel it: The mask had slipped tonight.
A sudden looseness around his mouth, a treacherous softness where the cheek should have held firm. When he smiled at the crowd, during that final, trembling bow, he’d seen it twitch in the reflection of a boy’s wide eyes. The image of his own skin cracking and peeling at the temples. The second wore long dark robes with a hood over his head, a pale face and blonde hair could be seen beneath the hood.
The dark youth crouched in the snow as the fair haired one merely stood pulling his robes closer, grateful for once that he lived in a priory. The robes made excellent winter gear.
“Galloglas.” the fair youth stated.
“Quiet Aeselfrith.” Galloglas replied.
“But you haven’t moved in… well for a long time.”
“I am assessing the situation.” Galloglas replied curtly.
“Are you sure you’re not frozen in place? There’s snow on your shoulders.”
Galloglas growled in response. Not for the first time Aeselfrith thought his friend was actually an overgrown Tomcat in human

Manuary is moving forward –– slowly, thoughtfully, and with a lot of teeth.
Thank you to everyone who has already answered the call of the first prompts of Dark Star Almanac: Manuary. The submissions so far are varied, feral, myth-heavy, and exactly the kind of darkness this Society was built for.
If you’re still circling the prompts: there is no rush. The Almanac is not a race and stays open the whole year.
