Comm - 2016 - SkekKel by Sleyf Comm - 2016 - SkekKel by Sleyf
This is a commission for :iconskekkel: who asked for her 'Dark Crystal' Skeksis character Lord SkekKel the Counsellor.  You can find out more about him here
SkekKel, the CounselorSkekKel is a skeksis Counselor, adviser and also an ocassional strategist, working under SkekUng and the Emperor, if needed.
His duties cover all that is uknown in the skeksis Empire, all that needs fast solution and what is hidden behind the others. That's why SkekKel educated himself, to be ready for every factor that may stand on his way. He worked for some time with SkekOk because of that but small Librarian never used his help directly.
But SkekKel is - mostly - a warrior. He fought with General in many battles with gelflings and beasts and earned a generosity of SkekSo. He trains with swords and daggers and feels best when in heat of the battle.
The Counselor has cruel tastes for his own amusement as he tends to dismember podlings and in the past also gelflings. But that doesn't make him a villain per se, he can be even too honorable for a skeksis, ready to protect others and help them. It's part of his nature, this uncommon light, connected with the cruel and sadistic darkness.
Counselor SkekKel-Refsheet by SkekLaLord SkekKel, Counselor and Conqueror. by SkekLa

I had a lot of fun with the shell thingy, and his sleeves.  I also think he's about the only character ever who can get away with wearing a ruff collar and still looking tough!  It was also a lot of fun to use some greys and sepia-tones for this one rather than a whole lot of colours

Thanks again for commissioning me!
SkekKel belongs to SkekKel
Obviously, the Dark Crystal and species belong to the Jim Henson monster workshop that we love

I knew what it was the moment I saw it. And I've only seen that movie like twice.

I definitely recommend it. I think you'll like it.

I'm not sure. I only read it in passing and haven't dug deeper on it yet.

Oooooooo!!!!! This is awesome! I love seeing these animal-humanoid characters from you! They seem like they'd be so hard to draw and yet you make them look so natural!

Thanks! They're actually a lot easier than human characters to draw!

Wow, the detail in this is just awesome! I watched The Dark Crystal again recently, goodness those things were nightmare fuel to any kid xD (though I was always a labyrinth girl, so I guess if you can stand David Bowie in obscenely tight breeches you can stand anything xD)
Anyway, fantastic work as usual!

Gah!!! *dives beneath the sofa with a skillet as a weapon* Oh this is brilliantly terrifying! Wow! Just wow! Them is mad skillz bruv! (Oh yeah I come from Croydon...innit...) I love his piercing, cunning gaze- it's almost sadistic- he definitely looks like he's contemplating murder and I love the detail and texture on his feathers, talons and beak- brilliantly drawn and painted! His outfit is magnificent- so wonderfully detailed too and it really suits him, gives him a Machiavellian air and reminds me of a cross between a Venetian nobleman and the Spanish inquisition! lol.
Plus I love the lime green lighting on his sword and claws- it adds a sense of menace. (Nice skull by the way- I knew I mislaid Uncle Yorick somewhere!)

Yayy fanks (my dad went through a phase of saying innit, it was soooo annoying)
Surely he is planning something nefarious *drums talons on sword calculatedly* (he's probably thinking on what to make for dinner lol...salad, or pasta??? Hmmmm, he could murder a cheese steak - ouch, that joke hurt)
Thank you, though I can't take credit for his outfit at all, I just recreated his character ref one.
Why thank you, I was concerned the green light and red light had ruined it afterwards, but i'm glad it didn't
(that's his skull change purse...or at least, I think it SHOULD be)

lol! I bet- I would probably disown my dad if he did that!
Lol! A cheese steak if it's covered in raw liver with extra kidneys.
Even so, you enhanced the outfit and made it look gorgeous- not that it wasn't already.
I honestly think the green light really works! :)

What a handsome fellow! His ruff is simply fabulous (so true, not just anyone can pull off a collar like that!) and his sword looks decidedly sharp and dangerous. And the details on his clothing, armour, and shell(?) are wonderful. The armour in particular, it kind of reminds me of the ornate breastplates worn in the renaissance, there's a Spanish golden age feel about the design. Very cool!
The posture is wonderful too: hunched but still extremely predatory. I feel like he's stalking towards me, ready to take my eyes for his collection.

I always imagined that wearing a ruff would be really annoying if you had an itch - plus you'd never be able to see anyone sneaking up to the sides of you - though it would work well to enhance your hearing :D *shouts across the room at one another because there's no need to get closer*
He probably just had his sword resharpened - yes yes, it's suitably choppy and slicey
(I think that is a shell, I don't really know much about Skeksis anatomy myself)
Thank you, but I can't really take credit for the outfit, it's just a re-take of his character ref outfit with the pot-belly armour (that made anyone look fat)
Another eyeball enthusiast joins the ranks and is another bird-like creature!  They seem to have a thing for eyeballs - he keeps the ones he collects in his mini skull-purse

Aw why thanks! He was actually a lot of fun, though at first I had his posture too straight and not vulturey enough. I'm better at drawing animals so he was quite easy to draw (plus I enjoy 'ugly' - that being, he doesn't have beautiful airbrushed features to make him attractive - though he could be a skeksis hunk - who knows! I don't!)

(Oh and sorry for not being that active, I took a break from dA comments on the weekend)

i guess ugly would be easier, since mistakes would add to the effect? i would be overwhelmed by the complication to be honest.  yeah i like drawing animals. lol skeksis cause terror in the hearts of small children XD they're so horrible.

oh thats okay, i've been a little bored.

Yes exactly!  You can cover mistakes up with boils or something, like an extra eye. Yeah my twin was horrified by them, especially theres that part where one is like attacked by the others, that part distressed her so much she still remembers it

Oh noes, don't be bored!

I'll be more active! Oh but hey watch the film "strange magic", I admit, the amount of singing in it is irritating, but the Bog King has an interesting design

It was! Although I couldn't really understand what the skeksis were saying, they need subtitles lol

I am here! And will try to respond to everything when I get my laptop out to type around irritatingly on in the silence :)
Yeah "strange magic". It's this animated film I saw on TV the other day, it had way too much singing in it but it wasn't terrible, just a bit like it was trying too hard to be popular with the use of popular songs in it. But I mean the graphics were nice
