My Workspace and Traditional Art Supplies!

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 15, 2015, 9:15 PM
Hello! Introducing my workspace/desk and art supplies today *U*
I realized that my old faq is really outdated and wasn't that complete to begin with.

This is just a general overview focusing on things I use most~ I might continue with more in-depth reviews later.
Keep in mind it's taken me 7 years to collect/buy this much!

If you're just starting out your collection and want advice, scroll down to after the pictures

00 by sleepypandie
Here is a panoramic view of my desk!
I'm trying to find nice shelves to put on top so I can put more things on it.

On the left on the floor you can see my cubby with larger paper/drawing materials that don't quite fit right now ; n ;
On the left of the desk you can see my surface pro 3, work laptop and intuos medium tablet.
Also my desk lamp, copic colorless blender bottle and penholder with misc items like lead, pencil sharpeners, rulers and writing things.

02 by sleepypandie

On the right side of my desk I have ~200 copic markers
(72 inherited from former art major - square copic markers
and the rest bought over 5 years - oval copic sketch markers)

I use the lid boxes of the copic markers to store things!
One of the 'boxes' of markers is actually a lid thats 40% full of markers and the rest is refills of colors I've use a lot.
I keep refills and extra pens I don't use as much in the other boxes
Pens I use a lot are in the open metal case

the water colors and waterbrush are the Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit (24 Colors)
I keep smaller paper pads and sketchbooks in the bin on the right!

01 by sleepypandie

close up of pens I use a lot! (from left to right)
Morning Glory Mach Campus Ink Pen 0.28mm (my favorite for inking sketches, will bleed with copics)
- white jelly roll (detailed highlights)
- 0.3 Graph600 pentel pencil - HB lead (detailed sketching)
- ZIG cocoiro letter pen, extra fine sepia (another favorite for inking sketches)
- staedtler mars plastic eraser
- (3) copic multiliners - 0.2 black, 0.3 sepia, 0.3 black (favorite!)
- (2) Deleter neopiko-color - warm gray 3, warm gray 1 (for toning sketches/inks)
- faber-castell pitt artist pen - warm grey III 272 (darker grey tone for brown toned paper sketches)
- (3) derwent graphik line marker - sepia, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5
- pentel pocket brush pen
- mono zero eraser - 2.5 x 5
- regular 0.5 lead pencil - 2B lead (general sketching)
- faber-castell pitt pastel white color pencil (soft highlights on brown paper sketchbook)

Advice for just starting out

disclaimer: these are just my personal opinions, so please take them with a grain of salt!

general tips

You DON'T need all the most expensive art supplies, just enough of what's quality and what works for you

look and try supplies in your local art store, don't just buy online.
I recommend some brands here, but they might be imported in your country and more expensive

If you're on a budget, don't save up for a huge set of markers without trying them out first!
This doesn't just mean trying them out at the store for a few minutes.
Try to borrow some to use, or buy a 3-5 set of skin tones or grays (always useful)
and use them for a while to get the feel of them, especially expensive markers like copics.

There are so many marker brands, not just copics sketch markers!
faber-castell pitt artist pens, deleter neopiko, tombow brush pens, prismacolors, and more
(those are just ones I've used)

Color pencils can be just as useful as markers, and are generally cheaper per unit!
They also can be used on more 'general use' paper instead of having to buy more expensive paper.

Look for sale /marked down merchandise in person at art stores.
(I went to the art store 2 days ago and 9 x 11 strathmore smooth bristol board pads of 20 sheets were $3.50, usually around $8-9 from what I remember)

recommended supplies

(this is with a student budget in mind)

1. non photo blue pencil
( when you scan an image the lines from this pencil don't show up, so you can use it as a base sketch if you're a messy sketcher like me who likes cleaner lines )
- faint blue lines in photo: Scan 8
- no blue lines in scan: KarLouiie

2. regular 0.5 mechanical pencil with 2B lead, and another with HB lead
(if you can afford it, try 0.3 mechanical pencil with HB lead, but they're a little pricey)
- I like to thumbnail and loosely sketch with 2B lead which is softer and darker than HB lead
- HB lead is lighter and harder and doesn't smudge as easily which makes it good for detail

3. white jelly roll
(for highlights/finishing touches/little mistakes in inking)
- nonbrand white gel pens are fine too as long as they have opaque white ink.
- I tend to like jelly roll because of the consistent quality

4. Morning Glory Mach Campus Ink Pen 0.28mm
at $2.00 a pen these are my favorite affordable ink pens
they don't hold up well if you watercolor/markers on top, but they are a really fluid, easy to control and create nice thin lines

OPTIONAL
5. inking pens
to start with, black copic multiliners or sakura microns are a solid choice.
I use 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 widths the most.

6. black ink + brush
(if you plan to fill in your sketches with solid black, black ink is a lot cheaper than using sharpie or inking pens)
- Higgins Black Magic Waterproof Drafting Ink
- cheap paintbrush

7. grey marker(s)
if you enjoy toning your sketches, 2-3 grey markers might be a good idea
Copics are nice, but a 12 piece gray set will run you $50+, and you probably won't need all those shades in the set, especially the darker ones.
I recommend deleter neopiko warm gray 1 and 3 (brush pen and fine tip with alcohol based dye, blends better but dries faster)
~$3.50 a single marker at an art store
or faber-castell pitt artist pen warm grey III (ink brush pen, waterproof, dries more slowly but doesn't blend as smoothly)
~$3.75 a single marker at an art store

Questions?

If you have any questions about art supplies, please leave a comment and I'll try to reply *U*
I've tried tons of pens, paper and markers, so that's mostly what I know.
I don't work with paint at all besides a little watercolor and I don't have color pencils anymore, so I'm limited in that way.

Up next? (I have a lot left to say ; n ; )
- watercolor and copic marker centric supplies
- paper/sketchbook reviews
- inking pens reviews + finding the perfect sepia colored pen
- opinions on marker brands

yumebon species info

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 7, 2015, 5:02 PM

disclaimer

Yumebon are a closed species belonging to kaeryi and sleepypandie.  We do not claim to own the idea of kemonomimi species or dream guardian inspired species with bells, but this is our specific take on all these elements combined with a story and a name.

introduction

A yumebon is a dream guardian of sorts.  Their presence encourages happy dreams and helps prevent insomnia.  Larger and more powerful yumebon are able to ward off or fight off nightmares.

hatching

Every time a child has a dream, a dream bubble forms.  These bubbles are usually not fully formed, and are slightly transparent.  Occasionally an amazingly happy dream bubble forms, and if it pops, a little yumebon hatches!  Only a bubble with enough substance will hatch a yumepon, not every dream bubble will hatch.

Once hatched, a yumepon will go journeying for any owner, they do not always choose to stay with the dreamer that hatched them.

At the time of hatching, a yumepon has all the energy from the amazingly happy dream bubble, which will fuel them until they find an owner.

Yumebon hatch fully formed for their given level.  As they gain more power and get closer with their owner, their appearance may change!

bells / chimes

Yumebon have no specific design elements, as their appearance is based on the dream that they came from.  The one treat they all share are a bell/chime of some sort that they wear as an accessory.  This bell connects them with their owner's heart and by extension, allows them to find their owner's dreams.

An owner is the only one who hears the chime of their yumepon's bell.  If the yumepon loses its bell, they won't be able to find their owner.

features / size

Yumebon come in all shapes and sizes.

Low level common ones that encourage happy dreams are around ~10cm tall.
Low level ones are usually kemonomimi in appearance and take features and design elements from children's favorite animals.

More powerful yumebon may be taller or more close to human size and can have weapons or items to fight off nightmares.

first meetings

Yumebon are all individuals that have their own personalities and likes/dislikes.

As a new owner, your first course of action is to touch a fingertip to your yumebon's bell to sync your rhythms.  Then your yumebon will be able to find you in your dreams!

care

Yumebon do not need to eat, they are fueled by the energy and color from happy dreams.  Some of them do enjoy the taste of human food though.

To care for your yumebon, please sleep regularly and love yourself!  The positive energy in your dreams will keep them healthy.  A yumebon with a sleep deprived owner will slowly lose its luster and energy.
