[Edit]: I realise that the weekend I'll do the 40 hour famine is the weekend before my trail exams... So instead of giving up my hand, which I need to practice and revise with, I'm giving up me right leg, which I only need to get around. And I don't. Because I'll be studying. For once.

Hopefully the title got some of you people out there's attention.

Anyway, basically this year I am doing the World Vision 40 hour famine! Basically, for people who don't know (Or people who don't live in Australia), the 40 hour famine is where you an anual event where you give up something precious to yourself that (Traditionally food) for 40 hours. I hear there are similar events that happen in other countires, like the 30 hour famine; basically its the same thing. The goal is the raise money. But for what?

Well this is where the Global Food Crisis comes in. The global food crisis is basically the dramatic increase of food prices in the world markets, and people in poorer countries cannot keep up with the price increases and starve. Its not because they can't look after themselves, and its not because they don't work hard enough. It's because the world is facing a huge increase in food prices.

www.worldvision.com.au/communi… for a very good video explaining what is the Global food Crisis, and why it is happening.

The number of people suffering from this crisis is immense. 1 BILLION people go hungry EVERY DAY. Thats ONE in SIX people. And the most likelyhood is that if you are reading this, you arn't one of the billion. Think about it.

So the 40 hour famine is basically a charity event mainly to help the starving people around the world. I'm doing it (For the first time) this year (August 20 - 22), and I'm giving up the use of my right leg. So how can YOU help? Well this year the 40hour famine has launched a website where you can donate online via credit card. And yes, I am imploring you all to consider to donate. To donate to my page (Don't worry; the money goes to those starving people, not me), go to www.worldvision.com.au/40HF/Pr… and check it out. Please consider donating, because this is about human lives.

So when you eat your next meal, have a think about the billion people who are starving right now. Think about what you can do.

Thats great :) I figured out that I had trail exams on the following week... so I decided not to give up my hands, and instead give up one of my legs. It'll be easier to study :)

Oh that's cool, I wanna do something like that too!
Here in Germany, we call it "Fasten" I dunno what it means in English Dx
Sleepy-phoenix's avatar
Well the word "fast" in English means to not eat for a reason (Usually religious) so I think that may be derived from German :)

English is a Germanic language, so it probably is. :)

English is a range of language meshed into one. Its got bits from French, German, Latin... I think...
Rosalina34's avatar
Yes, yes, it has, but it called a Germanic language, not a Romance language like French, Italian and Spanish. :aww: My French teacher told me. :P

I see... I never knew that... Guess you learn something new every day :D
Rosalina34's avatar
Yep, even if it is something randomly useless. :P

Nothing is useless. Except for breathing. I mean, who needs to breath?
