Sooooo, my activity here has been practically non-existent. The last few years I've been working in animation production and editing other peoples Youtube videos. I've just been kinda existing in this stale neutral zone of nothingness in between projects. Just keeping my head down and doing work.
I've been thinking about shifting my focus to producing my own work for a long time. I don't have that one niche that I can fall back into over and over again to build myself a name. I like too many damn things and just focusing on one for too long burns me out and causes me to develop a temporary dislike for it. I enjoy working on character and environment design. I like the rhythm of voice acting and writing stories. I genuinely love the motion of animation and the quiet tedium of editing. (When my computer isn't trying to kill itself.)
I have, however, learned that I work really well if I have an over arching focus that I can break down into smaller tasks and goals to work through. So I've made the crazy decision of creating an animated series . . . and not just the pitch episode, the whole damn thing.
Now before you drag out the white jackets, let me explain my project a little before we get into my sanity or lack therof.
My current project is called Nova Flight, it's a slice of life story that takes place in outer space during the aftermath of one war and on the cusp of another. There are still flashy explosions and fight scenes typical of the science fiction genre because I like animating effects particularly explosions. However I am placing it in the slice of life category because I enjoy writing character driven stories and dialog along those lines.
I am deep in the pre-production for the first Nova Flight character trailer and juggling that with writing scripts for some videos that I have planned. Tackling all of the obstacles found in creating an animated series on my own will at least be a learning experience. Regardless of whether or not I have funding I want this project to become a reality.
Oh, hey, here comes reality right now to punch me in the face. I realize that I am only one person and I'll inevitably need the help of others but I don't want to ask for that help without being able to offer compensation due to my strong belief that artists deserve to be paid fairly for their work. So for now I'll be tackling what I can by myself and know that this project will probably take years to come to fruition. It has already taken years to get where I am now on the project.
(Not to mention i'll be moving to Ft.Collins in November so I'll be opening up commissions in the mean time to help buffer the moving costs. That information will be posted in the next day or two.)
So I've decided to invest a lot of my time into maintaining a Youtube and Patreon which means developing some kind of consistent schedule. Rigid schedules are intimidating so to keep my anxiety from consuming me I've been working on a back log of stuff to fill up any dead space that occurs while I'm getting adjusted to the posting schedule. As well as generally creating a filler system that gets put in place so my Youtube channel doesn't look dead as hell in between animations. So here's a hoping at least parts of my plan survive first contact.
My posting is currently following a bit of a timed trickle effect from one platform to the next that strangely enough will mean you'll start seeing more activity on this account but that is still a week or so away. I also wanted to make sure each account had its own thing so here's how it's gonna work.Patreon: www.patreon.com/skriy
This is ground zero, homebase, the place below the iceburg where all the action happens and my main focus as of now.Instagram: www.instagram.com/skriy
This is where I post random pictures, doodles, and teasers. The activity ebbs and flows but I can confirm that this is where my Inktober stuff goes so expect lots of stuff to come.Twitter: www.twitter.com/skriy
... It's twitter so some pictures usually after they have been posted to Instagram, and random statements.Youtube: www.youtube.com/user/skriy
All final animations and vids go here.Tumblr: skriytoons.tumblr.com
Where I post spoiler free character blurbs and exercises. As well as the final resting place of artworks that have been through Patreon and DA.Deviant Art: skriy.deviantart.com
All final digital paintings go here a week or two after patreon. Art memes, commissions, and gifts go here as well.
