Because I honestly need to start keeping better track of where I've been, where I am, where I'm going, and More Importantly for my followers, what you guys want in regards to this gallery and if I'm providing it for you. After all, this is a service not a charity.
All right, Let's start with....
I started doing daily doodles over my break to add some variety to my artistic portfolio, as well as generate content I could leverage for either a bigger fanbase online, or material to print for conventions. To a certain extent, that has worked; my doodles are the most popular things I've done all year, and people have started making requests for them. That being said, there's a few things that need improving:
-Scheduling: I thought I'd have enough time with the weekend and print compiling to buffer enough daily doodles to compensate for my day job. I was wrong, mostly because I overestimated the amount of time and energy I'd have when I left work, which resulted in my not working when I got home. The best work around is to readjust the buffer so I have as much backup as possible, rather than simply staying a few days ahead.
-Feedback: I'd love to start opening up the choice of daily doodle subject matter to patrons. I'm kinda hooked on this "4-5 disparate characters becomes a full composition" idea, though... What do you guys think? Should you have the option of suggesting the next series? Or just characters within a series I've selected? Let me know what kind of input you want to have on this.
The Crimson Fly.
The Crimson Fly animated webcomic was to be the cornerstone of SkipperWing Productions. From YouTube, to Instagram, to Twitch, everything centered around it. You can even see it in the tier levels. Sadly, the technological hurdles of adapting the comic to HTML 5 have basically shattered all my plans going forward. I've started making progress towards recovery, the most recent of which is finally creating/adapting a format for the fully animated version of the comic. That sample version will be available to patrons soon (as soon as I figure out how to handle to promos).
So, what's going on with the Crimson Fly?
Now that I know that I can do what I want to do, I need to make sure that everything about it is as successful as possible, not just the art. To that end, I've started replanning the ongoing story for the Crimson Fly. You saw a little bit of that, with the expression concept art from yesterday. As time goes on, the stories for each individual episode get fleshed out, and characters are defined, you're going to see more of that.
Here's what I want from you guys: What aspects of the Crimson Fly do YOU want made available? Model sheets? Animated gifs? Workfiles (I can't guarantee that they'll work for you, because, unlike PSDs, FLA files aren't universally compatible with everything, but I'll make them available)?
Flybits was supposed to ease the amount of time I spent absent between trying to learn how to adapt the Crimson Fly for HTML and being away from the internet, and started to take on a life of its own when I started taking it seriously. To the point that I realized that I couldn't do it justice, and do the thing I'd created it to be able to do.
Where is Flybits now? On hiatus and buffering. In addition to creating new ideas for strips on the fly as part of my daily exercise (so I don't have to work as hard to create new ideas for strips on the daily), I'm also starting to adapt the old comics (all 75 of them currently) for HTML5 (in addition to the buffers I haven't actually drawn yet). Once that's done (and the Crimson Fly is prepped for launch) both The Crimson Fly AND The Crimson Fly: Flybits will return. Count on it.
Sonic SSS was a fanimation I started working on last year in the wake of the animated content associated with Sonic Mania. Its mostly done; just have a few more money shots to take care of, and believe me, they are a PAIN. Once its done, though, please share it! I don't know when they'll be done, cuz cleanup takes a while, especially for 11 seconds of animation with two characters and moving backgrounds. But please be patient!
Once it's done, do you have any fanimation ideas you'd like to see me animate? I'm thinking of a Mario kart tale of revenge between two brothers, but that's just one idea! Let me know in the comments!
Streaming was supposed to be another way to interact with you guys, that also started lagging when Flybits did. Part of it was Flybits, but also part of it was my lack of growth as a streamer. A lot of that had to do with the nature of my content (art creation) and how that's not a growth industry on Twitch if you don't already have a base. I'd hoped to grow that base on Twitch, and I think I hit a ceiling with my current methodology.
To that end, if Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same result, then something needs to change. I want to do more game streams, and my best streams seem to be with games that are tough-but-fair, with lots of margin for hilarious error. The last two games like that, for me, were Super Mario Odyssey and Celeste. What do you guys think? What kinds of games do you want to see me stream (I have a Switch, a PS4 and a PC)?
And that's not to say I want to stop doing creative streams! I love sharing my process with you guys, and answering questions. Also, working on stream helped keep me focused on Flybits and the Crimson Fly, AND also provide speedpaint fodder for "SkipperWing draws a thing" So when that does come back, what sorts of things would you like me to draw on Stream? Or would you like me to do tutorials? Hit me up in the comments!
Wow. I wasn't expecting to have so many thoughts about where I am, and what I'm doing! I was gonna close this out with plans for next week, but this post is way too long for that, so I think I'm going to make a separate post about that tomorrow. Sound good? Yes? No? Let me know in the comments below!
