Rawhide Angel pg 4 delay

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 13, 2012, 7:20 AM

Hey guys,

My appoligies, the fourth page has been delayed on the count of my having a major freelancing gig with a big agency. The kind you don't turn down if you are trying to make a carear for yourself.

Rest assured I will be continuing my work on it inbetween this gig and the forthcoming Anime Con in my area this weekend coming, where I am entering into the Iron Artist competition!

Honestly, I'm a bit ashamed to admit, but I've never been to anything like this so I don't know what to expect. But I hope it will be a positive first toe into the water and I'll be doing more things like that in the future :)

Stay cool and take it easy :D

Rawhide Angel

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 14, 2012, 9:06 AM

Hey guys,

I thought I'd write a journal update and say a little more about Rawhide Angel.

Rawhide Angel has been a web comic concept that has been in the back of my mind for the last 18 months. But I haven't had the time whilst I've been working various design jobs to do anything beyond sketches and notes. Unfortunately, however, I've become just another victim of the jobs situation the financial crisis helped create, and now I have enough time inbetween looking for the next job to really get Rawhide Angel rolling.

Rawhide Angel is set in a fantasy wildwest, focusing on a female bounty hunter, breaking out on her own, trying use her skills to earn notorioty and the fortune that comes with it.

I'm heavy inspired by Manga, such as Slayers, by Tommy Ohtsuka and Hajime Kanzaka, Gunsmith Cats, by Kenchi Sonoda, American comics like J Scott Campbell's original run on Danger Girl and Mark Bagley's work on Ultimate Spiderman  and web comics such as Randomode's Pirate Madaline and Chalo's Las Lindas.

My hope is to use this a creative avennue to improve and practice my skills and stay sharp, while having some fun despite much of the gloom in real life out there at the moment.

I hope you enjoy the pages I produce in the weeks and months to come, as much as I will enjoy drawing them.

Take it easy :)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 27, 2011, 5:30 AM

Hi folks!

I just wanted to drop by quickly and thank you all for your support this year! It really means alot to me!

I haven't been around much this half of the year, so I have quite alot of messages to reply to and I'll be doing it soon, I promise.

This year has been really tough for me sadly, the job I got went wrong and I found myself working for a company that had its own ideas of how to treat employees.

So I'm job hunting once more, but I'm feeling positive and the prospect of a new year makes it feel like theres a fresh start right around the corner!

Also, my web comic "Rawhide Angel" is almost ready to role, so keep your eyes peeled for a post soon!

In the meantime, I hope you are all having a fantastic christmas and I wish you all a fantastic new year!

July, August and September Update

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 3, 2011, 3:56 AM

Hi guys,

I've been so busy I haven't had time to post or reply to messages, just so you know, my inactiviy doesn't mean I've left DA or anything like that.

Truth is I've landed a very nice job with an internet marketing compay as a designer and flash animator, which has left me little time for much else at the moment, but in a good way :D

I hope to be posting more regularly again in time, depending on my own work load, but I'd like to especially thank everyone that has commented, faved and even watched in the last few months, it's been really amazing to see and I'm touched by some of the attention my work has recieved.

Anyways, I'll have to cut this short for now, but watch this space!

Take it easy,

Shawn :)

June update

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 5, 2011, 5:28 AM

Hey guys,

I've been on  a little break while I really focus on job hunting, I've had plenty of near misses, but I'm hopeful that it'll come right soon.

I've also been building a website to help promote my work, I've got it to the stage where I can tweak and improve it now but I'm quite pleased with how it looks at the moment :D
It's available at, feel free to check it out.

In other news I'm still working on Rawhide Angel and might post more concept work in time! :)

Anyway, I hope you are all well!

April Update

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 15, 2011, 9:13 AM

Thought I'd update my journal, I mean how many DA pages are still wishing you have Merry Christmas in April? ^^;

I'm finding myself inbetween jobs at the moment, which is a bit of a double edge sword if I'm honest...

Anyway, onwards and upwards (as we say in the UK), I'd like to thank everyone for thier support on my recent work! It has been a pleasant suprise and a boost to say the least!

Peace everyone!

Merry Christmas!

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 23, 2010, 3:48 PM

Hey guys,

I just want to take a moment to wish you all a very merry christmas and all the best in the new year.

I'd also like to take the oppertunaty to thank everyone for thier support, comments and favs this year, they really mean alot! I've also been taken by suprise by the sudden popularity my Darkstalkers Tribute has gotten, so appologies if I've not yet answered any comments and favs, I have read them, but time and a full inbox don't make for great bed fellows.

As a result I can definatley say that a Felicia piece is deffinately in the works as thanks to the groups interest that generated the interest. My thanks you to you!

Anyway, I'll cut this one short as I have a load of presents to wrap and a few left over jobs before christmas starts with my family.

Peace everyone :)

First off, I must apologise for my long inactivity, given the nature of how crappy these times are I've been dealing with my own fair share. I won't go on about it as I'm sure if you haven't be affected by the economic times you are probably living underneath a rock. And lets be honest, its probably a very nice rock to live under and I'd like to join you ^^;

Anyway, thankfully I'm working as a contract designer and developer for the NHS at the moment.

Despite my sparse amount of submissions, I have been filling sketch books, but sparing the time to colour them at the moment is difficult between work, my commute and the tiredness inbetween. But thankfully I've bought my first car! so all I need is my licence and I'll be set :D

Never fear though, as you can see I am starting to post work again and intend to do so more :)

I'm not totally sure if I'm getting many people looking these days ^^;

As things stand I might rework my page, as it really looks like it could use something.

Peace :D

Avatar, how awesome was that!

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 5, 2010, 11:21 AM

I went to see Avatar last night, with no real expectation so as not to get caught in the hype, and I have to say how freaking awesome it was. I won't blow the story, but it ticked alot of boxes for me, a good story, great direction and the best 3D visual effects I've seen yet. There were moments I found myself flinching in my seat when wood splinters were flying toward me from explosions and it didn't feel like it was over the top at all!

So that film comes highly recommended you might say ;P

Anyways, the big chill has returned to the UK, so the country is on one massive snow day, it certainly made the journey home from the flicks interesting!

Happy New Year to you all and take it easy!

Merry Christmas!

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 23, 2009, 1:09 PM

Hi everyone!

I'm writing this having been out in this freezing weather we're getting in the UK, snow, sleet, rain, frost and ice with the odd thunderstorm thrown in. I'm just glad I won't be venturing outside again after today, I plan on having a cook up tommorow with a glass of wine in hand :D

Anyways, quick update on where I'm at really, I'm still employed which has kept me extremely busy and my website is online in a barely functional form, but its getting closer to being done everytime I work on it. I think its because its a personal thing that I have a habit of being fickle about it, hehe.

Anyways, not sure many people will actually read this as quiet as its become around here, but I'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

I promise to be a more proactive deviant in 2010, with my site and a scrapbook full of drawings I can say that I will be around more than I have the last six months.

Take it easy wherever you are and whatever you're doing!

Hey guys,

Its been a while since I've posted, I've had my hands full with my job, not that I'm complaining, quite the opposite infact. I got an extension on my contract and I've been doing extra work of the PR types at the company to produce some nice promotional work. All portfolio material, which leaves a nice warm satisfying feeling :D

I did have a blip though when I was unlucky enough to get Swine-Flu, not nice by any means, even though it took me a week of bedrest to shift, I swear it took me two more weeks to recover. It really packs a nasty punch. My scanner also cancelled its subscription to life, so I've had to replace it too :(

Anyways, I'd like to asure you I've not disappeared.

At the moment, I'm working on designing a website, so I hope to post more details about that in a while.

Hope you all had a good summer.

Take it easy,

Shawn :D

Hey guys,

Phew, my feet have yet to touched the ground since I got a phone call this morning offering a Multimedia developer's job after being interviewed yesterday afternoon. On top of that I was also offered the other position to learn and do some web coding for them too, so I've said yes without hesitation! I start Monday and can't wait to get my teeth into the work they want me to do :D

Anyways, it's a bit quiet around here so I hope you are all doing well whatever you're up to :)

Hey peeps,

Sorry its been a while, recently I've found myself pretty much bed ridden with flu, although no more sinister than normal flu I assure you.

However, I've been doing my best to stay sane and sharp and I have a few things on the boil. In particular I'm working on a website for myself, I've bought the domain... (no comment ;P) so I'm just designing and re educating myself in the ways of the web designer as its such a fast moving thing and its been a while since I've had a go :)

Anyway, I wish you all the best, particularly if you're job hunting too, it seems even jobs "just to get by" are in short supply at the moment.

Take it easy and I'll be more active soon :)

Hey guys,

I hope you are all well :)

That was a longer gap between submissions than I hoped, but I had to sit on the Udon piece until the winners were announced. Sadly I wasn't included, but a big congratulations to those that made the cut, and to those of us that didn't, just remember, the thrill is in the chase and I had alot of fun doing it :D

On another note, I was a little concerned to read about this "Orphan works" bill that is looking to change copyright law in the US. The bill basicaly equates to people being able to use or profit from your work if they are unable to contact you for permission. Presumably this means they would have to seriously try and must be able to prove they've done so, but I think there are people who will exploit this should it be passed in America and will impact on artists both locally and internationally.

If you wish to know more about this, I recommend you read this month's issue of ImagineFX.

Anyways, sorry for the darker tone there but it's just smart to be aware of those things :)

Take it is easy and I hope to be posting again soon :D

Hey guys,

So sorry I've not been around for a while, with times being the way they are I've been doing work to get by.

However, I'm still alive and kicking and looking to submit and comment more regularly again.

Hope you are all doing well.

All the best,

Hey guys,

Just to let you know I am still around, if not a little busier than usual. I'm try and reply and comment to some of the stuff in my inbox, but as you might understand I may not be able to do that for every dev, jounral or comment, but I will get up to speed again.

Anyway, I've just posted a new piece which I think maybe the start of a series of illustrations inspired by iconic starlets of the past. Any thoughts and suggestions you might have are most welcome.

I'm also making preparations to begin offering pencil and ink based portraits or lineart for an agreed price, this could be from a photo or a illustration of a character of you're own creation (sadly, no copyright characters for obvious reasons). Feel free to express an interest at this point while I sort things out at my end and straighten out the finer details :)

In the meantime, I hope you are all well.

Returning from a break and some news

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 2, 2008, 5:50 PM
Hey guys,

I know I'm usually around to offer feedback, but I've been away for a few weeks trying something different. Sorry about that, I have an inbox full of deviations and corespondence to look at and I'll be going through that and replying and commenting again soon. I also have one piece on the go which I haven't posted a WIP deliberately for a nice suprise, so keep those eyes peeled :)

My news is that A Piece Of The Action has been nominated for Best Student Film in the regional Royal Television Society Awards, which really blew me away. If I should win, the film will compete with other winners for the national RTS award in London, but I'm just really happy for the potential exposure it'll give me regardless of winning anything :)

In the meantime, I wish you all well.

New additions and progress

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 9, 2008, 8:30 AM
I've been recently doing some life purging and discovered some of my life study work and decided to put some up since I'm seeing some great traditional work from some of you guys. I do have alot more than the two I've posted but I'm leaving that for now so I don't end up throwing too much into my gallery at once.

In other areas I am working on a few things, but I haven't really been very dynamic the last few weeks since starting to feel ill. But I hope to be posting again soon and start to get my momentum going again!

Take it easy,

Shawn :)

The Aquarium #1

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 2, 2008, 10:27 AM
Hey everyone and welcome to my new monthly jounrnal feature and the first of many I hope.

One of the best things about DA is that it serves as a common ground for artists of whatever taste and style, and while
it's always good to stay curious, now I think there's no excuse to take a good look around for new inspiration that could
send you down a totally unexplored path.

Staying curious being the theme, I decided to feature a tallented artist whoes gallery is the definiation.

Featured Artist: :iconemberleo:

Emberleo's gallery is a mixture Photography, Painting with both Tradional and Digital mediums and Graphic Design, shows how both
tallented and flexible she is in applying her creativity. Here are several deviations that really caught my eye among her many other works.

Roxie by emberleo

A beautiful demonstration of using lighting, it almost looks like the subject has been sculpted. I freely admit I'm not quite as adept at
photography and the wonderful nuances photographers use in thier work, but I can really appreciate the impact of this image. A wonderful portrait.

Lost by emberleo

I really like this watercolour example, it's a difficult medium to tackle and the use of a single colour in many tones against dark sillouetes is extremely moody
and really draws the eye in even when viewed as small as a thumbnail.

Collagraph by emberleo

Lastly, I really like this print work, the fact that Emberleo has used natural materials in order to create the shapes and textures is fantastic and the textures created
by the material and the paint add more to the naturalistic theme and don't look out of place here.

The topical tip

I thought I'd round of each feature with a thought for the month, something that springs to mind and I would be interested to know what you think in return.

Since this is the first, I thought I just briefly talk about the theme of the feature, staying curious. Having just finished many years of general training before I chose me specialism, it's really dawned on me how important it is to keep looking at other mediums and genres. When I was young I was in a bit of a rush to focus on what appealed to me at the time, but I realise how other mediums and practices have influenced my own outlook of art. It makes the experience all the more personal when you consider the path you traveled so far and what's still out there to help your work evolve, that's one of the things that makes me tick.

Well, that wraps up the first feature, hope it made an interesting reading and I hope to be doing the same again in a month.

If you have any suggestions for an artist to feature or a thought for a topical tip you can note me and I'd be very interested to read it.

Take it easy,

Creative writting on creatives creatively creating

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 28, 2008, 3:59 AM
... well, atleast that's what I had in mind as going by the recent little poll I ran. Thanks for the positive feedback :)

I'm hoping to run a feature on an artist or two among a few other ideas and observations in a monthly journal. The point is to promote curiosity and a little discussion and also because I really enjoyed writting the fame game feature a few weeks back. Nothing heavy or serious, just another way of staying curious :)

More on that a little later on.

I was the Dark Knight last night and was completely blown away, not only by the funny and sinister Joker, but how they portrayed Harvey Dent's story. Although I fully admit I don't know everything about Batman, having read only a few graphic novels recently, the story did remind me of The Killing Joke. It's one of the first times I've seen a movie that has actually met or even exceeded the twenty-first century hype that came before it.

Oh, and I can heartily certify this film bat-nipple-free, long-live Chris Nolan! :D
