Perspective

The person who tells you that you don't know what it's like to be somebody else sure thinks they know a lot about what it's like to be you. Remember, kids: Nobody can know what you can or can't know.

1. - I don't know if I'm X or Y. - I used to be, or have the potential to become, Y.  But right now I feel like I'm X, and I'm not particularly interested in proving otherwise. - Oh no!  Something has happened that conflicts with or provokes my inner sense of Y.   - I wish I could let it slide, since I'm X and not Y, after all.  But I just can't.  Even as X, there's only one thing to do. - Alright.  I guess I have to solve this problem. 2. - Hey!  Solving this problem is proving harder and more complicated than I had expected! - Apparently I can't succeed at this task and be X at the same time. - Damn, I guess I have to stop being X and start

Centipede

A centipede's twelve pairs of legs Help him move lightning fast. When you should see him, And think to squish him, He's already moved past. But to kill a scutigerum, You need not buy a gun. Just stare the bugger down And ask, "Please, tell me how you run!" "It's very simple, son," he'll say, "I move leg six, then three, Then nine, then four —or was it two? Or one?  Oh, mercy me!" And while the beast is pondering If it's four or one or two You will not need An ounce of speed To introduce him to your shoe. The same thing works on you, young man, When you dance, or draw, or read. If you ask yourself, "How is it done?"

Tao of Storytelling - Heroes and Villains

Tao of Storytelling - Heroes and Villains

Tao of Storytelling, part 2 - Heroes and Villains. There are two central memes of storytelling that fit together like yin and yang: 1. Somebody wants the wrong thing, gets it, and suffers. 2. Somebody wants the right thing, gets it, and prospers. "The wrong thing" can be ANYTHING that's at odds with The Way things really work.  Maybe the character wants to shirk her destiny, be the richest man in the world, commit crimes with impunity, or eat nothing but cake for the rest of her life. Storytelling is about solving problems and making (restoring) balance in a scenario that's full of tension or imbalance at the beginning.  Storytelling is

No Hand Band

No Hand Band

Stub-handed Joe played theremin accompanied by his band of merrymen And Rob the Quadriplegic added the bass all with the sounds that he made with his face And Mark the drummer kept up the beat by playing the drums with only his feet The crowd goes crazy for this wonderful band So let's all be nice now and give 'em a hand.

The Girl Living in My Closet

There is a Girl Living Inside My Closet By Thomas Boguszewski: There's a girl in my closet -please don't go asking me why- but she lives in that closet and subsists on rations of pie. There's a girl in my closet, Don't tell me she's not there. She's got arms, she's got legs, she's got feet and she's got hair. There's a girl in my closet. She sings and she dances. She even helps out with the latest scientific advances. She has good taste in music: Bach, the Beatles, and Nelly... But ironically she can't stand anything by R. Kelly. I love the girl in my closet and the girl in my closet loves me so sometimes I worry that whe

SB2: Hell Freezes Over

Once a poet created a marvelous poem That made all his friends very proud just to know him It told of a trickster and his fantastic feats With beautiful rhymes and rhythm-ic beats A "Skeleton Boy" who stood up to his fears. The poet was writing for more than three years But just at the beginning of year number four He announced, "Now I don't have to write any more! The story is finished, it's totaled, complete It's done, it's wrapped up, it is tidy and neat! And because it is perfect without any equal There is no way in hell that I'm writing a sequel!" Then he sold his poem and he made lots of money Because people loved it –

Dorian's Charge

Dorian's Charge

This is the dirge of Dorian the Dane who dragged enemies, piss-pantsed, into a world of pain So Dorian the Sexy had just sat down to sup when he suddenly realized that some sort of thing was up A gaggle of his most god-damnèd nemeses Had congregated creepily nearby to the premises So he ripped off his shirt, as one might, before sex and revealed his scars and his glorious pecs He marched forth towards the fray while unbuckling his pants and tripping o'er them turned it into a wicked war dance Thus removing his shorts and bearing his schlong He set off to the battle for right against wrong "Geronimo!" He screamed, as he plunge

My Bio
I'm a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, filmmaker, puppeteer, poet, writer, and many other things.

I was educated as a visual artist at the Perpich Center for Art Education in Minnesota, and as a filmmaker and animator at the Tisch School of Arts at New York University. I work out of Minneapolis-Saint Paul.

I'm fueled by a love of laughter, learning, and outright weirdness. I enjoy colliding intellectualism and "cheap" entertainment, where things like mythology, philosophy, science and history meet robots, puppets, superheroes and cartoons. I value causing epiphanies and blurring the line between "ha-ha" and "a-ha."

I consider each art form a special language, and my goal is to be as eloquent as possible in all things from ink wash to tea drinking. I am interested in the creative process as a way of life, and bringing elements of improvisation and collaboration into all things. As self-expression becomes more automatic, life becomes more authentic.

New Year's Resolution(s)

Henceforth I will publish one thing —a piece of flash fiction, a picture, a poem, a comic, a song, etc.— on my blog http://thisisartinprogress.blogspot.com/ every day (or some rate close to that). January is watercolor month.  I will work on a watercolor painting every evening after dinner. 2012 sees an increased focus from me on my relationships.  Friends are there to uplift, challenge, team up with and champion each other.  Such relationships are arguably the only things that matter. 2012 is also the year I turn commercial.  I will endeavor to show off, sell things, get jobs, and generally be a presence like never before.
