Xavier was hungry. He had been relying on the road's passersby for supplies. For some reason, no one had traveled the road between Tabira and Mosswood today, so today hadn't been a productive day for him. Both cities must be full of cowards, he figured. He was going to compensate for that by robbing from the next Pokemon to show up, although he had planned to do exactly that anyway, so this wasn't really making up for anything. For a moment, he considered doing something more 'honest' and 'respectable' to earn food, which is when he realized that his hunger was making him delirious and someone needed to show up soon.
Eventually, a pair of plebeians showed up: a Zigzagoon and a Sandshrew. Both of them looked somewhat young, which made them easy targets. Xavier wanted to hurry up and get this over with, but didn't want to be discourteous.
"Greetings, ladies," he said as he bowed. "There are many dangerous things up ahead. For your safety, you ought turn back."
"Hah," Cath replied. "We'll be fine. It's you who should be worried."
"You feel confident in your abilities, then? And lack confidence in mine? Perhaps we ought demonstrate out skills against each other." Xavier conjured up a Magic Room that isolated himself and Cath from outside interference. The room's item nullifying effect took place immediately, causing Cath's helmet to fall to the ground. Cath tried picking it up and placing it back on her head, but it immediately fell off again. Again, she tried picking it up and placing it back on her head, but it immediately fell off yet again. Xavier didn't want Cath focusing on her helmet the entire time, so he intervened.
"This is a duel," Xavier stated. "You need to focus on your opponent." As he said this, he stepped forward, grabbed the helmet, and tossed it aside.
"Duel? I'm not alone. I--." Cath looked back at Lyla and noticed that Lyla couldn't get through Magic Room's barrier. "--oh."
Lyla was scratching furiously at the barrier, but it wasn't giving way. "I can find a way through. You just worry about Xavier."
Cath turned back to face Xavier again. "Well, that won't be a problem."
Lyla's last line surprised and worried Xavier. "You know my name?" He was going to ask if they were Trackers, but he was interrupted by Cath. She jumped and did a front flip, curling up in the process and striking Xavier's face with Rollout. Xavier took that as his cue to stop chatting and start fighting. Rather than ask, he responded by lighting himself ablaze and chasing after Cath. Flame Charge wasn't his best attack, but he needed the extra mobility. He really did not want to get hit by Rollout, especially if it kept going too long. Once Cath turned around, Xavier tried kicking her away with his right leg, but he ended up injuring himself while trying it. Even worse, it barely slowed Cath. Xavier knew another hit from that would take him out, so he tried stalling. Rather than face her, he used Magic Room once more. His plan was to quickly put it back up again, giving him a way to stall until Rollout stopped and lost its power. Unfortunately, he left himself open for too long. Lyla, who had tried bypassing Magic Room by using Dig to get underneath it and attack from below, had enough of an opening to get in and hit Xavier's left leg. That hit cost Xavier his ability to remain standing and his will to fight. He fell over.
"That's enough! I yield!" Xavier yelled louder than he intended to.
Lyla had climbed out of the hole she dug. Cath stopped rolling and uncurled inches away from Xavier's face. She was angry and at his eye level, which made her seem really scary. After scowling for a few seconds, she spoke. "...Yeah, fine. You probably can't keep fighting anyway." She then went to retrieve her helmet. It stayed on this time.
Xavier stood up and regained his composure in an attempt to retain some dignity. "That was a rather underhanded tactic you used there, although I only have myself to blame for allowing it. You won't be so fortunate next time." With that, Xavier walked away. Fortunately, his legs weren't broken or paralyzed.
"Was that it?" Cath asked.
"I suppose," Lyla replied. "We needed to scare him off, and we did."
"Something about that felt odd, but I'm not sure what." Cath paused to think for a moment. "Maybe I'm just too used to wearing this helmet. Whatever. We're done here, then."

I understand, Xavier. I often need something to eat after being beaten down dozens of times too.
