I almost always start softly and desaturated before I go more concrete with my textures. Here are the soft intermediate steps of my last textures. In these initial steps I pay the most attention to usability in order to be able to go in every possible direction. This should also be useful for you.

no rules for any creative usage, non-commercial or commercial, use them however/whereever you want. This doesn't include using/uploading/selling my textures as they are or claiming ownership, I still made them.

I updated the license text as well, so far I handled this account by the stated rule in my FAQ.
No, artist's comments aren't above legal agreement one signs as you buy it. If client asks me to show the texture license it would show that it's only for non-commercial use. Real life is not DA. Stupid legal stuff can come up and commercial artists have to worry about it.
