Kickin' It Old School by sinccolor Kickin' It Old School by sinccolor
11" x 17" @ 450 DPI. Art by Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair. This is the cover to the WildStorm Fine Arts Spotlight on WildCats (say that ten times!). It's also an image that was drawn, inked and colored about 15 years ago. A few months back, WildStorm head honcho Hank Kanalz asked me if I would be interested in re-coloring some old Wildcats art that they could not find files of. Most of the pieces they sent were done before I started there (yes, THAT long ago). I said "hell-yeah!" This is probably my favorite from the whole stack since I was told I didn't have to match the previous version.

Hahahaha true!
A little question if I may, Alex... What's called some effect I see you have used on some of the Blackest Night pages for the ring glows and the BL Power Battery? I mean is something that looks like some sort of fractal figure or something like that layered on top of the usual diffused glows, a lot of colorist seem to use those these days for sfx and I can't seem to find the name for it.
I'm pretty sure it isn't a regular photoshop filter.
Thanks for the help in advance!

They're called KPT filters and you buy them to add to PS. I use 2 of them on this page and messed with the color and painted them here and there to get the look I was going for

First time I saw this image was on a postcard I received from Jim (I'm sure someone replied for him even then) in response to a question I had about Void...I think I was in my early teens then. And, of course, I still have that postcard...lol

THIS IS SOOO AWESOME! Really...can't stop smiling! :) It's weird, 'cause the other day I was flipping through some of Jim Lee's older X-Men comics, and thinking how a lot of the artwork was dulled down by the flat coloring of the time. I always wanted to see something like this from you, and you really did an impressive job! You really have to color in that 4 page fold-out cover from X-Men #1 and give that artwork some justice! How cool would Magneto be with some awesome glow effects!!!? Would make an awesome poster! Okay...sorry for writing so much..it's just so cool... :D

Yeah! You really have to do it! It's your born duty as a colorist...and not just any ordinary colorist...but JIM LEE'S hand-picked colorist! This is probably one of Jim's most, if not all-time, famous and best known pics! I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who've tied to color it new already...but no one would do it (or even SHOULD do it) better than you! :)

Funny thing is that it's one of the pieces I hand-colored and sent in for the talent search way back in '93 that got me the job @ WS (then Homage)
