PE: How to Advertise Commissions

How to: Advertise Commissions

Many deviants offer commissions, but how do you effectively advertise them? This article will go over some methods for maximizing the exposure on your commissions so that they can be as successful as possible. :la:

Commission Widget

This is the one method I cannot stress enough. Commission Widgets are one of the most effective ways to advertise your commissions because they not only feature your commissions on your profile page, but also add them to the searchable database of dA's Commission Page. Numerous deviants use the Commission Page to find artists to hire, so it is a smart idea to add yourself to the database.

However, simply slapping a commission widget onto your page is not enough. You need to make your commissions as appealing as possible through the following steps:

  1. Commission Examples: The Commission Widget allows you to display several examples of your artwork, so do make sure to include them. Don't leave people guessing about the nature or quality of your commissions.
  2. Description: Include a detailed description of your commissions, using all of the tag words that you think are relevant to your commission. The Commissions Page uses the words in your description to help it search, so the more info you provide, the more often you will appear in the search results.

For example, here's an example of a very well done commission advertisement:

Commish example by SimplySilent

Notice how the artist uses a variety of key words in the description to ensure that it will be found in the search results. Whether people search for 50x50 icon, pixel avatar, blinking icon, or animated avatar, this artists' commission will appear in the search results. So don't limit yourself! Make sure to include all of the relevant tag words that you think will help people find your commission.

The forums have two different threads where you can advertise your commissions, depending on whether you are doing them for money or points:

  • Job Services: For serious, paid services where you want to be compensated with money
  • Projects Forum: For services where you want to be compensated with points or Premium Membership

If you wish to advertise in the forums, make sure to post a thread with a clear and appealing title. Also make sure to include thumbs of your work in your post instead of only redirecting people to your gallery or commissions journal. Make it as easy as possible for people to see your work and commission you. Don't make them do extra work!

For every artwork that you submit, place a link in the artwork description to your commission info. That way, if people like your art, they will immediately be able to find your commissions and commission you. Instead of making others hunt around on your page or journals to see if you offer commissions, show them exactly where they need to go.

There are a variety of groups that can help you advertise your commissions, so take advantage of the opportunities! Here are some of the larger groups for commission advertising. Make sure to read their rules to learn how and where to advertise your commissions.

Your signature can also be an effective method of advertising, especially if you make a lot of comments each day. Add a link to your commissions in your signature to give your commissions extra advertising.

Feature for Feature

Ask your friends or watchers if they would like to feature your commission info in order to receive a feature of their commissions in return. Everyone ends up winning, so this is certainly worth a shot.
