"It Was The Moon That Stole My Slumber"

Third typography poster for uni. This one illustrates the type for an extract of lyrics from the Silverchair song "Across the Night".

The line is about being unable to sleep because of the arresting luminosity and power of the moon, and the song in general is about falling in love with the night and the escapism and freedom it provides, but also the associated frustration that comes with insomnia. The song's elaborately orchestrated, and in a way that harks back to a bygone era.

So I tried to encapsulate all this imagery in my illustration. I took inspiration from the video

see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoL5Q7…

which has an old silent-era film look, with flickers and areas of obvious brightness and contrast, and I looked specifically at George Milies' "A Trip to the Moon" (the one where the rocket lands in the moon's eye, brutal lol).

Hope you like!

I love this song and I think you encapsulated the imagery from the video amazingly. It reminds me of the part in the video where 'Act 1' comes up.

Did you ever do bubble writing as a kid? Or block letters and then colour them in? That's where it all started for me, and really it's not that different! Just...a continuation and refinement :D

This is just stunning! Enchanting details and styling within the letters. As I said, stunning work and well-deserving of a DD.

Thanks very much for your wonderful words :aww: They mean alot!

what did you use on these? :)
Simanion's avatar
Ah, well this is a combination of things. I used Artline felt tip pens to draw everything, as well as some graphite pencils, and then inverted it so it reversed the black and white to give it that scratchboard effect ;)

so whats the original size of that poster? :) :squee: its made in the computer but its not :)

Hmm, well the original drawing was about an A5 page from the top to the bottom, then I scanned them at really hi-res and inverted to white on black, and arranged all the pieces exactly as i wanted them :D But all the sections are drawn in pen first.

Oh.

Oh I want. *gimme hands*

This is absolutely gorgeous. I love that you stayed with the video's silent film look (as you stated). It hits all the right spots of me, the spots that love steampunk and Rasputina and especially the giant spot that adores silverchair. I would gladly hang this in my house. You very much deserve the DD you got for this. Well done.

Haha *unnecessarily fends off gimme hands with fly swat*

So glad you like it, especially as a fellow fan. They may be over for now, but we'll always have the imagery. Thanks for your kind words :aww:

w00t, sweet as man. This and the dead lines one, and the food chain. those three are my fav's. I probably ought to try and start collecting peoples art at exhibitions and whatnot. I just never have money, but now i quit my shit job and hopefully will have more cash to throw at art.
i think jesse is trying to organize another exhibit at verb syndicate some time this year. that postcard auction was the best. you got any shows or work going up in the not to distant future?

Dude, art is way too expensive. Lol. If I was made of money I'd love to have a collection, but in the meantime I'll just slowly build up works from mates acquired through swaps, as gifts etc. Or prints. But sounds like you landed something nice jobwise! I'm pretty anxious about gaining actual graphic design-related employment...Still got one session to think about it though.

Yeah I got a fb message from him the other day - you gonna be in it? I have no exhibitions coming up, so I think I'd better attempt to be in this one...despite having no idea what i'm going to do for it, I'm not good with "themes" heh.

I'll do an art trade with you anytime mate, just say the word. the job i got is nothing too spesh, its a small company (the girl who started it was an honours graduate from wollongong) they make stickers, lables, bag tags, wall art, height charts, etc. everything is printed in house, so this being their busy period i'm mainly helping pack orders, sort and pick through different printed stickers and cutting hundreds of things with guillotines, putting and sealing envelopes. they said they'll train me to use the computers so they can leave me to do the printing and whatnot on my own. it'll just be good to get the experience, whatever i can get, you know.
all the good jobs ask for experience, and i dont feel confident trying for those jobs yet anyhow. ill probably do a tafe course in learning the adobe programs better some time.
if dropshadow (thats what hes going for) goes ahead i will try and get some work ready. however, dropshadow as a theme sounds pretty shit to me. i was thinking of doing some really detailed large scale prints which are cut in funny ways on the edges, project a light onto them which will cast a shadow on a wall bringing the whole lot together.
i dunno, i'd like to do an exhibition, but drop shadow seems to be a very very weak theme.
i dunno, jesses a great designer and all, but this concept just sounds awful to me as a theme.
so i'll do what i do everytime i have a theme i dont like. i'll just do what i want and piss some bullshit about how it fits the criteria. it's worked every other time. hahahaha
lets call it 'challenging convention'
