Oekaki Tool Tutorial
Going clockwise and starting from the top left corner are the descriptions of the tools.
F: The button marked 'F' when clicked will make a window full screen. This allows you to see more of your picture at a larger scale.
Redo: Pressing redo will negate a previous 'undo' and bring back what you undid.
Undo: This will take away the last stroke that you made. Pressing Undo multiple times will undo each preceding stroke.
Fill (paint): This is self explanatory. This allows you to fill in an area with color. But be careful because with every other paint program, if the lines aren’t connected, the paint will fill every connected space.
Next would be the tool buttons 1-7, but I will get to those later.
Color Palette: On the color palette you can select a color and adjust it to your liking. You have a nearly endless range of hues and tones to use in your oekaki picture. You should experiment with the color palettes and get used to customizing your own colors.
Color Adjuster: You have a nearly endless range of hues and tones to use in your oekaki picture. You should experiment with the color palettes and get used to customizing your own colors. The lower the number is, the darker (or less saturated) a hue becomes. The higher the number, the brighter and more saturated a hue is. Have fun with it!
Opacity: All you have to do is move the bar left and right to adjust the opacity of various tools. This can be used to make rectangles slightly clear, adjust tones, make Solid more "pencily", make rectangles slightly clear, and some other different tricks.
Line Thickness: Move this bar up and down to change the thickness of your pixel brush. The lowest is 1 and it can go as high as 30.
Layers: clicking this box will change the layers. Layer 1 is on top and Layer 0 is on the bottom. Whichever layer is showing up in the box is the layer you're on.
Zoom Buttons: These buttons allow you to zoom in or out of your pictures for a closer or smaller version.
Send: This button sends and submits your work.
Ok, now I will explain what the tools numbered 1-7 do.
1. This is the first of seven function buttons located on the tools palette. It has several options.
Solid- hard, solid pixel lines
Watercolor- used to create semi opaque lines or soft brushy lines (useful for paintbrush effects)
Text- You can create text with this tool. Just click the text tool and then the area on which you want your text to be. A separate window will pop up. Enter what your text is going to be in that window. When you're finished you press 'enter'. Keep trying until you get the right size and where you want it.
2. This button also has the options of Tone, Shade Off, HiLight, and Dark.
Tone- This produces half-tone patterns. The tone difference can be controlled with the Opacity slider.
Shade Off- This is just a fancy word for blur. It blurs your colors together.
Hilight- This is similar to the dodge tool. It lightens or intensifies the color depending on the color you want high lighted.
Dark- This is used like the burn tool. This will increase a color's saturation and tonal value. Repeated passes can turn a color black.
3. Rect- The rectangle button also has the options LineRect, Oval, and LineOval. This tool is for making solid or line shapes in rectangular or oval forms. Your pixel width will determine the width of the lines in LineRect and LineOval.
4. This button has the options of Copy, LayUnit, AntiAlias, Reverse LR, Reverse UL, and Lie.
Copy- This tools copies a selected area and moves to where you ant it to go.
LayUnit- This used to create a layer mask. It moves a selected area to a selected layer.
AntiAlias- This tool mildly blurs a selected area and takes away the “jaggedness” of some edges. It is not as strong as the blur tool though. Some colors may change.
Reverse LR- This tool flips selected area horizontally.
Reverse UL- This tool flips selected area vertically.
Lie- This rotates your selected area around 90 degrees.
5. This button has the options White and WhiteRect and Clear.
White- This tool acts as an eraser on one layer.
WhiteRect- This is used to erase rectangular areas on one layer.
Clear- This clears all on both layers. If you press this button accidentally, don’t worry because it is undoable.
6. This button has the options Freehand, Straight and Bezie.
Freehand- This tool is for freehand drawing.
Straight- This draws you straight lines.
Bezie- This is used to draw smooth curves. It draws straight lines which are then curved using handles. Mouse users will find this useful when doing curves.
7. This button has the options Normal, Mask, ReMask, And, and Div.
Normal- This allows you to draw on everything.
Mask- This will mask all black, which means you can choose another color and draw anywhere and the black will not disappear. It is very useful.
ReMask- This tool will color over only black in a designated area on one layer.
And- This colors under hues lower than the current chosen color. For instance, a dark green will cover a light green in one layer.
Div- This colors under hues higher than the current chosen color.
