The power and glory that had been Rome are a distant memory now. Scattered among the ruins of the empire, small kingdoms rise and fall like castles of sand, fighting a desperate battle for survival against the rising of the tide. People live in a world of fear as the strong prey upon the weak, showing no mercy, no rest, and, worst of all, denying any refuge to the downtrodden. To the east, we knew the empire endured, albeit consumed by its own internal upheavals and caring little for the fate of its western brother. The sword rules, and the armies that wielded it in the name of their crown roam the lands of the West, taking by force anything that would not be freely given.
