Some of you may have noticed that I haven't really been posting near as much lately. Over about the past year I haven't been my best. Last fall I had what I thought was a lymphoid that just would not recover after a cold, except it kept growing and started to interfere with my breathing and swallowing. When it finally got to a doctor to have it looked at I was diagnosed with a thyroid goiter. Long story short, ultrasound showed tissue ugly enough that surgery was scheduled. The surgery itself was not bad at all. I still had what looked to be half a healthy thyroid and was back up and kicking in no time. The ugly bit of tissue was sent off to a lab and in the big old swollen lump, they found a smaller cause. The big old nasty C word, cancer. It was just along a blood vessel but didn't look like it had put any tendrils out in such a way that it could have been throwing cells into my bloodstream thankfully but it was bad enough that they wanted to remove the other half of my thyroid just to be safe so rinse and repeat. Out patient surgery again, not a hard surgery but a little longer to recover from this time. I also was now functioning on no thyroid and parathyroids that had been poked and prodded more than they cared for. Your parathyroid for those of you who don't know (I know I didn't until all this happened) regulates all kinds of things but most notably calcium. You don't realize just how much your nerves love calcium until our hands and feet and sometimes even your face get than horrible pins and needles feeling for no good reason. Its annoying at best. It got to the point for a little while where it hurt enough I couldn’t do much other than stay in bed. The other half of my thyroid was also sent through pathology. No cancer this time but I found out that I also had something called Hashimoto's. It explained some longer term health stuff and why I was not feeling so great and had so little energy. The next step was to have a dose of radiation to murder any remaining tissue that might have not been removed during surgery. I was on a special diet and medication for several weeks prior for prep so the treatment could be as effective as possible. I spent an extended stay in radioactive isolation followed by another long while isolated at home. All the long term tests have come back negative! I still have a ways to go before I am back up to 100% but I am grateful to be as well as I am. It will take a little while longer to get used to processing synthetic versions of what my thyroid used to produce.
I don't really know how to express how excited I am for not one but two of my masks to be in a Cirque du Soelie show. It will be for only one night and for a great cause.

I am so excited! This mask will be on episode 4 of season 3 (Nasty Habits). The episode will be airing on October 20th. I have no idea who will be wearing it so I will be glued to the couch waiting and watching with everyone else!
I think this may be my mask in a preview photo!
I have adopted a new kitten who is an absolute fur fiend. She has torn my favorite tail to shreds. I'm looking to trade a mask for a few tails, pelts ect. I'm mostly looking for fox tails and bits but I think I could give a fluffy coyote a home too. If you are interested please send me a note.
I am busy out of my mind. Full time jobs are great for paying bills but leave me little to no time to make anything. I'm not going to give up being creative or vending even if it means I have to give up a few hours of sleep. I'm trying to figure out how to balance work and art and keep myself sane-ish. I have to be at least a little batty for trying, right? It would be a dream to just make art all day long. I might get there one day but it won't be tomorrow or next week or next year. Until then I'm going to have to do what seems to be an impossible balancing act between being a 'responsible adult' and reaching for the stars.
Dad helped me build my first set of displays about this time last year. They have served their purpose but when they were built I was thinking short term, something I could use to get by. They work wonderfully but I have to borrow the truck whenever I go to an event. Not too long ago the universe threw a wrench into things and now rather than driving a Jetta I have a CR-V. The cargo space is fantastic. Its not enough to fit the display boards though and they are a bit too much for me to set up by my self. Its about time that I invested in something better. I've looked high and low and found something that will not only fit well into my car but is something I can easily do all by my self. This would open up a whole new world of events for me. I could even go *gasp* out of state! The only problem is the strain on my pocket book. I just bought sed CR-V so funds are tight. While the initial investment will suck hopefully the increase in events I can attend will be worth it in the long run. To try and raise funds I am selling off a few of my masks at a greatly reduced price. That's right, I'm having a sale. The first round I am putting up my sugar skull masks up for grabs. They have been on display a few times and have a little ware so I am selling them for half price. They normally go for $120 so they are now $60. If you are local I will be glad to meet you somewhere for the hostage exchange. If you live elsewhere shipping will be $12 for the US, $20 for Canada and $35 for everywhere else. Either comment here or send me a note if you are interested. If the mask is pictured it is still available.
Deer's ears are freaking huge. I'm reworking my deer mask while I'm too doped up on off brand Benedryl to trust myself with painting or sculpting. I'm trying to make him a little more realistic and try something new with the stuff on his antlers. I want to eventually do a different version for each of the seasons but I'm not sure how far I want to to take the variations. On the low end I could do as little as changing colors on a set foliage design on the antlers. On the crazy far end I could have different flora on each season. Holly for winter, flowers for spring, oak for summer, wheat and maple leaves in all their colorful glory for fall. I also am playing with different color variations on the deer if not different species for each one. Something like Carabu or a white deer for winter, chital/pale for spring, and red deer/a more warm base summer, white tail/darker, cooler browns for fall. (flipflopping on the last two) I hope this still sounds like a good idea in the morning and isn't just me yammering while slightly off from antihistamines.
I really should be finishing the luna moth that someone ordered for the summer ball that my work puts on every year. There's that little voice in the back of my head that is naysaying everything I have on paper. just posted an AMAZING luna moth mask. One of those evil little voices doesn't want me to look like I am copying her. The other one wants me to stop because there is no way mine is going to look that good. I need to find whatever bit of my sanity is left and arm it with a half brick in a sock. It worked for Rincewind, it should work in the delightfully demented corners of my brain.
I do apologize to all the good honest people out there but the few are fucking it up for the many once again. Now if you are wanting a mask it is going to be a deposit before I even start the design. I have had three people in the last month order custom masks and then vanish. I have too much on my plate to be wasting my time on such things. Once again sorry to all the good guys.
Another birthday in the bag and another wedding where no one died. March has been rather productive so far.
My bee hives have doubled and will soon double again. I helped Dad extract a hive from some poor guys wall. We had to tear out the dry wall and peel out all the comb. It was a really big and very active hive. They were VERY not happy about being vacuumed out of their wall. Now they are well settled in. Finally found the queen the other day. Big beautiful girl. Next time I have the top off the hive I'll try and remember to take my camera with me and see if I can get a picture of her. The second double is going to be from Dad moving extra hives over to my yard. Between pulling hives out of buildings and catching swarms I think we have 13 hives between us. My parents yard is a downright fog of bees during the summer months. I'm taking on a few more to try and make their yard a little less crazy. At the rate things are going I am going to need my own bee suit so I don't have to borrow Mom's all the time. Its not too much of a problem, I live about two blocks away from them but it would be more convenient to have my own. Besides, having all three of us suited up for the big robs would make things so much easier.
I put in an application to be in the Dragon con art show this year. Still no word on if I'm in or not yet. I would really like to have a bazaar table but I would settle for some wall space. Either way I have floor space to crash on already lined up.
Now that the madness has calmed down to a more reasonable level I am taking orders again. Masks, leather work, sewing ect. Just don't be too surprised if I am slow to respond the day after St. Patrick's day.
I had the best time on the cruise. The wind, the water and omg at the food. I'm a little closer to flesh tone with some really horrible tan lines. It seemed like as soon as I got off the boat I had orders and projects for Mardi Gras. Though the Fat Tuesday merriment is over I am still swamped with stuff. Custom orders will be open again after March 10th. You are welcome to contact me with ideas or requests, just know I won't have time to put my hands on leather till March.
The world is going to have to function without me for a week. I'm going on vacation! I've never been on a cruise before so this is either going to amazing or absolutely horrible. The jokes of 'I'm on a boat!' Will run rampant knowing the group I am going with. The 10 hour drive with my boss, his wife and Liz my friend/travel agent will be interesting. Liz and I were girl scouts so I have a funny feeling that we are going to drive Mitch (boss) up the wall with girl scout songs. Darby(wife) and I will finally design costumes for her belly dance troop. All the while I will be eating massive amounts of candied ginger to avoid getting car sick.
Did I mention that we are already fighting over who will be on who's shuffle board team? I really think you could lock the lot of everyone going on the boat in a room with no windows and we would still be able to amuse ourselves so I'm going to stop worrying and just have a good time.
See everyone in one week!
Commissions for pre-existing designs are currently OPEN.
Commissions for custom work are now OPEN.
There was just enough time to get in a breath between Christmas projects and getting ready for Mardi Gras. My life is either insane or dead boring. There is no in between. I'm going on my first cruise at the end of the month! I never thought I would be able to afford such a thing. Having a friend who is a travel agent and going with a group pulled the cost down just to within my reach. I've been needing an adventure.
Huray! Article on me an my masks posted in the local paper.
Boo! Corrections were never made.
1 I'm 27, almost 28
2 Masks are cut at the same size as the pattern
3 I use exacto, not scissors
4 Its not very clear about the help from Linz. I've always done the sculpting and most of the painting. She helped with the flowers and some of the leaves. I now do all of my own painting.
I am not currently taking commissions. I will be available again starting November 14th.
